GULF COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) – Data from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is showing increasing red tide numbers along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
“Over the past week, the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was observed in six samples collected along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Bloom concentrations (>100,000 cells/liter) were present in five samples from Gulf County,” the FWC said in a statement.
More news out of the Big Bend:
The FWC issued a red tide caution on Oct. 3 that was lifted on Oct. 8 due to water samples showing that “red tide is no longer present or is at background levels near this location.”
However, a sample gathered near Pig Island showed red tide numbers at the highest possible level.
“Fish kills suspected to be related to red tide were reported to FWC’s Fish Kill Hotline or other partners over the past week in Northwest Florida (Bay and Gulf counties),” the FWC said.
