David McLaughlin, 35, entered Iceland in Whitehaven, carrying a bag for life on July 14. He looked at alcohol on the front shelf and then placed numerous bottles into the bag for life, Workington Magistrates’ Court was told.
Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said McLaughlin then walked round the store before walking out without paying for the goods.
McLaughlin, who was not legally represented in court, said: “I would like to apologise for my actions. I have got an addiction and I’m trying to get it dealt with under Recovery Steps.
“I have never done anything like this before and I won’t do it again.”
McLaughlin, of Greenbank Avenue, Whitehaven, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop.
Magistrates fined the defendant £40 and ordered him to pay £50 in compensation to Iceland. McLauglin must also pay £85 costs and a £16 victim surcharge.
