Must be weird for Heather nodding and smiling as Catherine and Mícheál talk about her in Irish, just assuming they’re being nice (which they both were)
She spoke well. I wasn’t trilled about any potential candidates at any points during the process but I do believe she has potential. She is well spoken, outspoken and does share a lot of the views of the majority of the population. I feel I’ve been quite lucky in every president so far during my lifetime so I hope she lives up to the expectations some people have put on her.
Remind me in 5 years when everybody’s complaining about her comments on the Russian invasion of the EU
I hope they won’t be disappointed; some younger voters seem to be under the impression she can do things that are not within the President’s remit.
Voted for her reluctantly, hope she proves the reluctance rather than the vote wrong.
Glad we don’t have to do this again for at least 7 years.
Congratulations President Connolly! A major win for the Irish left, I hope the next six years go well.
Glad she had a resounding success. I was worried as half the reddit comments seemed afraid of her outspoken (and correct) opinions. Important to have someone with conviction.
Why are people so salty about spoiled votes when their candidate won by historic margins. Just grow up and enjoy the win.
Maith thú agus guím gach rath uirthi mar Uachtarán na hÉireann!
Largest ever vote share and raw vote for a winning Uachtarán 🇮🇪
It’s an interesting dynamic how the main parties were doing their best to smear CC up until yesterday and then once elected everyone cuddles up. Politics is so two-faced. You really do need to have a thick skin.
Delighted for her, what a historic win! 👏
She spoke so eloquently, was lovely to see & hear.
Declan Ganley and Maria Steen are only raging.

Kinda funny that the Labour linked TD from Galway West who is elected at 68 is replacing the Labour linked TD from Galway West who was elected at 70.
Especially given their personal history.
Good. Humphries was a sad spiteful candidate who came across as utterly spoilt. Good riddance
Hold on lemme just collect all the previously over confident rugby da tears
Good God, that hall is horribly decorated.
So delighted by the result; I think she’s a fine person. (Not aligned with everything she espouses, but that applies to dear friends too, so it’s nothing.) She’s cultured, calm, reasoned. Those things matter in the rôle, and every election, we have faced an outside possibility of some utter Yahoo.
The big hurdle now will be quieting the spluttering nay-sayers. That’s the problem with elected heads of state; almost inevitably, division is implied in the result.
Maybe Cats 1 & 2 will provide the balm needed now! 🐾🐾
Sense prevails.
Really good turnout for CC.
Whats on the minority side is bleak, 424k for an orange woman. I dont think people in the south understand really what that sectarian through and through organization is, its started off after a lynching of catholics , was open violently anti catholic early on, then became more the non-violent social cloak for RIC/RUC, B Specials , UDA … you name it. They now like to play a game of ‘we are just protestant culture’ , good excuse for a bigoted organization that looks to 18th century military marching as show of dominance. They have yet to prove they have changed bar adopted the language of inclusive liberalism (still Catholics and woman cant join cus it would go against their core) unlike other actually descent protestant organizations. They, to this day, hate catholics by large and yea maybe some lodges are more chill, but its not what its about behind closed doors. Even if they did actual reform , honestly , with that history baggage, its just best for people inclined to join them to go for other organizations. All my NI catholic friends just feel another typical kick in the face from the southerners with her being considered a serious candidate .
As for the spoiled voted, uff i hate to see how that crowd is gonna manifest in a general, hopefully NP still dont get their shit together by then and SF can win back the angry working class vote
So incredibly happy and envious of you all. I hope President Connolly stands up to the rise of fascism across Western Europe. All love ❤️🇮🇪
Congratulations to her, I didn’t vote for her but I wish her all the best in the role. I think she’ll be fine as long as she avoids any huge diplomatic missteps.
All the people with their spoiled votes can now go back to being racist and complaining about foreigners. Up President Connolly.
Not much else to choose from was there 🤣
so in 2004 have all vote because there only one to be president?
That’s it lads. Soon we’ll be back to the bread vouchers and the 14 children per household.
We’ve had ten presidents and this is our third female president. Proud to be Irish today.
I’m delighted, a dear friend of Daly and Wallace in the Áras
So no more support for Ukraine from this president?
Michael Martin! Leo Varadkar! Simon Coveney! Simon Harris! Maggie Thatcher! Can you hear me? Your boys took a hell of a beating!
Yes there was a protest vote.
No, the protest vote would not have had any impact on the outcome in the slightest.

Isn’t largest number of votes just a “population goes up” statistic
fair play to her
Lovely speech as gaeilge and as béarla.
So the spoiled votes are still significant but the narrative that it was the main reason she won is bollocks
A moment of silence for the boys
