WANA (Oct 26) – Iran exported more than 99.5 tons of saffron to various countries during the first half of this year, earning over $94 million in foreign exchange revenue. According to data released by Iran’s Customs Administration, this marks a 73% increase in volume (42 tons) and a $45 million rise in value compared to the same period last year.
During the six-month period, 99,581 kilograms of saffron, packaged in containers ranging from less than 10 grams to 30 grams, were exported to global markets, generating $94,444,929 in revenue.
Major Importers of Iranian Saffron
The United Arab Emirates ranked as the top importer, purchasing 29,691 kilograms (29.69 tons) worth $29.17 million. Spain followed with 19,601 kilograms (19.6 tons) valued at $18.89 million, while China ranked third, importing 12,645 kilograms worth $12.52 million.
Other key destinations included Afghanistan (10,513 kg, $10.34 million), Germany (3,025 kg, $1.65 million), as well as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Iraq, Turkey, Australia, Oman, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Year-on-Year Growth
In the same period last year, Iran exported 57 tons of saffron valued at $49.46 million. The latest figures highlight a substantial rebound in both the volume and value of Iran’s saffron exports, reinforcing its position as the world’s largest producer and exporter of saffron, often referred to as the “red gold” of Iran.
