The Missing Agenda: Plaid Cymru’s Nature Blind Spot

I really want Plaid to win in the Senedd election but I also want us to counterbalance the power of the farming lobby within it. They need to know that nature restoration is needed for the benefit of farmers and the rest alike.

  1. Interesting read. Parts of it I agree with, others are a bit of a stretch. But it does bring to attention something odd that I’ve noticed about Welsh politics.

I’ve lost count of the amount of Plaid voters who say “If I lived in England I’d vote Green” or English Greens saying how much they like Plaid. But if you look into the policies, especially on the environment, energy and rural issues, they’re not natural bedfellows at all.

  2. Good to see plaid’s anti-environment record called out. I used to work in that sector and plaid were always the worst for letting pollution go unchanged (especially when it came from farmers, which most of it does)

  3. Plaid are basically pulling the Starmer strat with a more charismatic leader.

Don’t say anything of substance. Lay out none of the negatives. Don’t take any real choices. Give vague, high level commitments to everyone, try to keep as many people in the tent as possible.

It has worked to date. The problem is, at some point in the next year or so, they are going to have to make a choice. That will either be with the manifesto, or when they get into power and need to start delivering.

I think there is a real risk they say nothing and just end up as continuity Labour with a few more flags.

  4. Last time Plaid were needed to pass a budget, they dragged environment funding up

  5. I stopped supporting our farmers when I realised we subsidize them to export most of what they produce. It’s something like 80%+ of the land is used to produce meat. 80%+ of which is exported.

Don’t know why Plaid chase the farming vote when so many of them vote for the conservatives.

If only we had a green party of wales wanting inderpendance.
