Tokyo | As US President Donald Trump touches down in Malaysia ahead of this week’s APEC summit, attention is shifting to his likely face-off with Chinese President Xi Jinping – a meeting that will shape the next phase of the US-China trade war.

Trump, fresh from announcing sweeping tariffs on Chinese goods in retaliation for Beijing’s rare-earth export curbs, is reportedly seeking a string of critical minerals deals across Asia to build leverage before sitting down with Xi in South Korea on Thursday.
