A 56-year-old man has been charged with murder over the alleged stabbing of a woman in Western Australia’s far north.

Police allege the woman was stabbed multiple times with a knife at an address on Frederick Street in Broome on Friday evening.

The 58-year-old woman was rushed to hospital but died from her injuries.

In a statement, police said they “believe the incident is family violence related”.

“It will be alleged a verbal altercation occurred between the two individuals inside the residence before the man stabbed the woman several times with a knife,” a police spokesperson said.

“It is believed the incident occurred minutes prior to emergency services arrival.”

The man was arrested nearby a short time later, with Homicide Squad detectives arriving in Broome on Saturday.

Forensic police were scouring the property on Sunday.

The man was initially charged with aggravated grievous bodily harm, but the charge was later upgraded to murder.

He is due to face the Perth Magistrate’s Court via video link today.
