That’s about 5 years production from Saab, but they have announced plans to double capacity. Sweden doesn’t have an active order at the moment and there aren’t any international orders, so Ukraine goes to the front of the line.
Well, this isn’t as relevant as people would think at first glance.
>[Defense Minister Pål Jonson told](https://www.aerotime.aero/articles/sweden-gripen-sale-ukraine-after-war) […] that the Gripen E/F, the newest variant of the Swedish fighter, could be a potential option for Ukraine in the long term. [Jonson stressed](https://www.aerotime.aero/articles/sweden-ukraine-gripen-e-letter-of-intent), however, that any such deal would only be possible after hostilities ceased […] citing the political and operational risks of supplying advanced combat aircraft into an active conflict zone.
>Kristersson stated that, based on current production capacity, the first Gripen deliveries could take place within three years of a finalized contract.
This means that *after* the conflict has ended, *if/when* Ukraine and Sweden reach and agreement and sign a contract *if/when* Ukraine manages to get the necessary funding, then the deliveries *could* start after three years.
Even if we disregard the insane amount of speculation and variables, this plan is well in the 10-15 years range from now on.
I believe that until then, Sweden will send a low number of older Gripen models, – most likely JAS 39C and D – possibly as soon as 2026.
A relevant crowdfund is one for [five training aircraft](https://www.weaponstoukraine.com/kampane/stefan). This one is also for a long term time horizon, but training of adequate pilots is necessary for long-term peace in Ukraine.
