The Louvre has transferred some of its most precious jewels to the Bank of France after last week’s daylight robbery, reports say.

As per a report by French radio RTL citing unnamed sources, the move involved items from the museum’s Apollo gallery, home to the French crown jewels, and was carried out on Friday under a secret police escort.

The Bank of France, which stores the country’s gold reserves in a massive vault 27 meters (88 feet) below ground, is located just 500 meters from the Louvre on the Right Bank of the River Seine.

The thieves had stolen eight precious pieces worth an estimated $102 million from the Louvre’s collection on October 19, exposing the museum’s security gaps. They broke in using a crane to smash an upstairs window during opening hours and escaped on motorbikes.

The robbery sent shockwaves around the globe, prompting France to reflect on what many considered a national humiliation.
