Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson is condemning President Donald Trump’s demolition of the White House East Wing, calling it a “travesty.” New images released Thursday show the entire section torn down to make way for a $300 million ballroom.Thompson said he’s sent letters to major corporations that donated to the project, demanding answers. In July, Trump promised the renovation wouldn’t interfere with the existing structure. But that was before the East Wing was reduced to rubble.Around the Jackson-Metro area, there are mixed reviews when it comes to supporting or opposing the new ballroom. “I don’t think it’s right for them to tear it down,” said Brittney McAlister. “It is like a historical landmark. I just feel like if we would’ve torn down any other building, then it wouldn’t have been ok with anybody else.” “If that’s what he wants to do, that ought to be good. Other presidents have done restoration on it,” said Rusty Queen. While Thompson continues to advocate against the construction of the ballroom, one person said the issue is not “big enough.””Some people are going to complain about something at all the time. I love Bennie Thompson, but this is not an issue,” said George Thompson.
