Louvre heist: Manhunt underway as security issues come to light • FRANCE 24 English
We’re going to talk more about this now with Ellen Gainesford who joins me live from the Louv. Ellen, the museum closed again this Monday. What more do we know about what exactly happened and what’s happening with the investigation? Well, Genie, I can tell you that for the moment it seems like there have been no arrests in this ongoing investigation, but we have heard from uh the French president, Emanuel Macron, pledging that the culprits will be found and the jewelry restored. And uh well today uh in the French press we’ve heard uh reports from uh France’s uh cordes uh which is the the court of uh auditors here in France. Um they’ve been looking at some preliminary findings of what might have gone wrong here at the Louv and uh it could have been uh to do with the lack of security infrastructure and apparently also a lack of sufficient amount of uh of security cameras. Well um to give you a little bit of of atmosphere about what we’ve been seeing here today. Yeah, there are people still thronging around taking pictures of uh of the famous courtyard and the pyramid at the Louv, but uh unfortunately no visitors will be allowed to enter today. We’ve heard that uh from uh museum authorities um in person speaking to their press officer earlier and uh well uh we we know that that’s going to lead to a lot of disappointed visitors and some tourists who have traveled really quite a long way. Uh I spoke to one lady who’d come from all the way from Oklahoma with her mother who um who is now 70 years old and had been hoping um on this trip to see uh the Mona Lisa but uh unfortunately wasn’t able to. So there’s going to be um a lot of disappointed uh visitors and tourists here today. Absolutely. And meanwhile here in Paris as well as throughout the country uh this heist is really being seen as a sign of perhaps a lack of security in France particularly when it comes to some of the country’s amazing artwork. So tell us a bit more about this and if French museums really do have a security problem. Well yes Jeie exactly. We’ve heard from uh France’s uh minister of the interior uh newly um um uh brought into the country and uh he’s been saying that uh France uh is actually uh quite vulnerable in terms of its museums and that’s in the wake of a state of uh quite high-profile robberies that we’ve seen here in the country. Uh just in September there was a robbery at Paris’s natural history museum and that involved around €600,000 worth of natural gold being stolen. And uh in that same month uh it was the the museum of Limoge of the porcelain museum. Around six million euros worth of objects were taken there. And uh we know that French authorities were looking into installing uh security procedures uh uh following those robberies. But they they obviously haven’t happened uh soon enough uh to prevent this this weekend’s robbery. But we do know that luckily um such high-profile robberies uh at the Louv are relatively rare. The last one um being in in 1911.
A group of thieves recently stole extremely valuable jewelry from the Louvre Museum. Authorities have launched a manhunt to find the suspects. This incident has raised serious concerns about the museum’s security and whether more needs to be done to protect its priceless collections. FRANCE 24’s Ellen Gainsford has updates on the investigation and security measures.

If France cannot currently afford to put in place appropriate security at the Louvre and other museums then sell some of the art work kept in storage to pay for it.
The security issues are not just in the Louvre!

I'm 90% sure that the 'gang' is 100% the British Museum.. They have a knack for stealing and historical animosity towards the French 😉
