Six Ógra Aontú members expelled and three suspended after discovery of secret WhatsApp groups containing racist and antisemitic messages.
John Bryan, Ógra leader and aide to party head Peadar Tóibín, was among those dismissed; he later issued a public apology.
Peter Irvine, education officer and Belfast representative, was also involved; through his solicitor, he denied holding racist or antisemitic beliefs.
Posts included racial slurs, antisemitic conspiracy theories, and extremist imagery referencing far-right and pro-Palestinian militant symbols.
Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín said he was “shocked and disgusted,” reaffirming the party’s zero-tolerance policy on discrimination.
The secret chats violated Aontú’s constitution and ethos, which emphasises pluralism and equality.
The whistleblower, a member of the group, said he was “ashamed and embarrassed” for participating, describing the chats as “indoctrination” where young members competed to post the most offensive content. He ultimately reported the group to party leadership.
I always felt Aontú was a party with ideas from Ireland in the 50’s, turns out I was wrong, Germany in the 40’s more fitting?
This, and Peadar spoiling his vote and appears happy that as a leader of a party it’s the right thing to do.
He told the Indo that he’s ashamed of himself and these texts (written when he thought nobody outside the group was looking) do not reflect his beliefs or values 🙄😅. Thank God for that 😂

I have always held a natural disdain for people who are members of a youth wing of any party. I knew a guy years ago, who while he wasn’t a racist, he did send a picture of himself with a dildo up his arse to a random girl he knew. He became a parliamentary assistant to our Taoiseach later on.
I’d imagine if you saw the group chats of most parties’ youth wing, it would be pretty grim. Aontu youth wing being racist shites is especially no surprise.

One of the problems here is Aontu won’t really get held to account for this. Literally every time Peadar Tobin opens his mouth he should be reminded that his party fosters these kinds of attitudes. I’d be surprised if anyone remembers this a month from now.
The rise of right-wing Irish nationalism and post-covid headbangerism has given us a cohort of these types looking for a political home, Aontú have chosen to court them & this is what happens. I don’t know if Peadar realises what he’s dealing with. There’s his type of social conservatism mixed with centre-left economics, and then there’s out and out hate. All parties seek to attract new members & and support, and they can’t control who joins, but the push from the larger party base to shift further and further to the right is probably a hard one to resist, assuming Peadar has some principles and doesn’t want to be like Reform or the Repulblican party. But if you look at some of twitter posts of members, it’s fairly grim stuff. Aisling Considine is a prime example.
