Risk of Atlantic current collapsing much higher than previously expected. The AMOC brings warm water from tropical parts of the Atlantic Ocean up to Europe, where it then cools again and goes back south in a loop.

Risk of Atlantic Current Collapsing Much Higher Than Previously Expected

  1. >With carbon emissions continuing to rise, new research finds a 70% chance that the AMOC collapses. This would wreak all kinds of havoc from South American agriculture to the cities of Europe. Even an “intermediate” level of emissions would result in a 37% chance of collapse. And a low-future-emissions scenario still sees 25% chance of collapse happening.

  2. Every time I read about the AMOC collapsing I get a sense of dread in my stomach.

Most people in my social circles in Europe know about this, and we feel so helpless. What can the normal middle class do about this? Stop eating meat, stop driving fossil fuel cars, stop buying fast fashion and yet it will still not be enough unless EVERYONE does this, forcing those corporations to change their business strategy.

I’m not very hopeful for the future of this planet with the likes of Trump and his climate denying cronies at the wheel. In Europe, they’ve made strides to try and minimise environmental impact, but it’s still not enough.

Late stage capitalism has got us by the balls. The middle class need their jobs in order to pay rent, buy food, and it’s usually at these corporations that are so bad for the world.

  3. I live in the snowy parts of the eastern United States in a broken down house that was supposed to be a project house. Financial conditions have changed such that it’s questionable if repairing this house is worth the investment and that is assuming a stable climate.

I’m starting to seriously consider donating the place to anybody that wants to tear it down for the lot and instead applying the time money and labor building fresh elsewhere with designs intended for energy efficiency and extreme weather resilience. But then reality sinks in, and you realize the food system on which you depend in the community in which you can hire specialized skills when you need them and just the community that makes our social lives fulfilling…… it’s all on the unpredictable chopping block
