It looks like Sweden’s most nostalgic pop dream might actually come true. According to Aftonbladet, SVT is close to securing the long-awaited return of the A-Teens to the Melodifestivalen stage.
Sources close to the production say that everything now “points to them competing” in Melodifestivalen 2026, with the four members: Sara Lumholdt, Amit Paul, Marie Serneholt, and Dhani Lennevald planning to release new music for the first time in over twenty years.
“SVT has been chasing them for a long time. They hesitated and first said no, but now everything suggests they’ll be part of the competition,” a source told Aftonbladet.
The A-Teens already hinted at their renewed chemistry when they reunited as interval performers during Melodifestivalen 2024, before launching a small but powerful comeback tour that took them from London’s Mighty Hoopla Festival to a triumphant homecoming at Stockholm Pride, where they played to a roaring crowd.
Producer Karin Gunnarsson, who has led the Melodifestivalen team since 2021, has reportedly been instrumental in convincing the group to compete. But one detail could still hold things back, the song.
“They want to take part, but it depends on the song,” one insider said. “They’ve tried one track a few times, but it seems they’re not fully happy with it yet. If it doesn’t feel right, they won’t do it.”
If it happens, this would mark a full-circle moment not just for the band but for Swedish pop history. Christer Björkmanonce tried to bring them into the competition two decades ago, right after the release of their Greatest Hits album in 2004 but the plans never materialized, and the group quietly disbanded a couple of years later.
The A-Teens shot to fame in 1999 as a teenage pop act inspired by ABBA, conquering charts around the world with “Mamma Mia,” “Upside Down,” and “Floorfiller.” Now, 25 years after their debut, the idea of seeing them return to Melodifestivalen and possibly even the Eurovision stage has fans buzzing with excitement.
SVT is expected to reveal the full Melodifestivalen 2026 line-up in early December. If the rumors prove true, the comeback of A-Teens could easily steal the spotlight as a nostalgic, feel-good moment tailor-made for Sweden’s biggest show.
