A pervert flashed his genitals in front of shocked supermarket staff in Gateshead. Gary English is facing jail after he exposed himself in sight of staff at an Iceland store one morning in August.
A court heard that the 38-year-old, who has a long criminal record, especially for theft, had stolen goods from a shop in Seahouses, in Northumberland, just weeks prior to dropping his pants at the food store. He was arrested but failed to show for a subsequent court heard and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
He then also breached his bail by failing to sign-on at a police station, so was kept in custody and put before magistrates in Newcastle, where he pleaded guilty to exposure, failing to surrender to custody and shop theft. He also admitted breaching his bail.
Chike Anieto, prosecuting, said the flashing happened on August 12 this year, while the theft, which involved £17.50-worth of cider from One Stop, was committed on July 24. Jack Lovell, defending, said the case should be adjourned for the Probation Service to see if English was suitable for an alcohol treatment requirement.
Mr Lovell added: “He has been diagnosed with liver cancer and treatment has been ongoing and he’s undergoing radiotherapy at the RVI. The police are aware of his condition.”
District Judge Kate Meek agreed to adjourn the case. She told English, of Whitehall Road, in Gateshead: “You have pleaded guilty to a number of offences. Before you are sentenced, I want you to be assessed by the Probation Service.
“For all of the offences, I’m adjourning your case until November 14 when you must come back to these courts. If you don’t, you could be committing an offence and a warrant maybe issued for your arrest.”
