In essence, unless I’m mistaken, the ‘investments’ these big energy companies are bandying about to try and avoid a windfall tax will just result in further overseas profit, with negligible benefit to the UK.
They’re investing in a future Britain that is a terrible place for normal people to live.
And a planet that is increasingly unliveable for all of us. That’s the future they’re investing in.
Profits being taken off shore is not exactly investing in our future is it.
We should take back control of our oil and make it publically owned resource like Norway and Alaska instead of letting these filthy private companies get rich over them.
Our ‘set fire to the planet’ future
No tax them, tax them all.
Energy companies should be taxed like 70%, it’s our resources they’re profiting from.
Or we could tax them, and then invest in our own future…
They are tripling their profits but don’t tax them? But then we should tax Amazon and Meta?
News flash, billionaires own the media, im taking a guess here but the arseholes who own the guardian have stake in energy companies.
Take a windfall tax and set generous feed in tariff for domestic and small business generation from solar and wind Reduce planning requirements too.
You would quickly see a shift in supply to be low carbon and reduce energy bills
When you invest in something, are you not doing so for your own benefit? Is that not what an investment is? Something that will give you a return?
Even if we assume these companies are investing in Britian’s future, does that not just mean they are putting a little money in now in order to get a larger amount of money back later? And that money they get back comes from where? The rest of us? No?
It’s simple really. They invest to increase their profit margins – just like every other business. They’re making huge profits already and want more but they all realise that the future isn’t in fossil fuels so have to invest in renewables to stay in business.
Trying to spin the investment as good for the UK is deceitful at best. Yes, we’ll have energy from renewable sources eventually but the price we pay for it won’t be less than we’re paying now unless they’re forced into it with a lower price cap. And that won’t happen while the Tories are in power.
“we can’t tax the profits or they won’t invest in the network or Britain”.
Profits are after all that though… Investing in stuff reduces your profit, and therefore your tax burden. Profits are purely into the pocket of shareholders, if they were used for anything they wouldn’t be profits. Taxing profits *incentivises* companies to spend and invest their revenue to reduce their tax burden.
Of course the tories won’t admit that and will disguise the issue because they’re all mates at the top and simply want more money for themselves.
Bullshit. All they care about is lining their own pockets and without any legal restrictions, they will continue to increase prices to the point of putting people into situations where they can’t afford to eat, heat or live.
