A federal U.I with Athlone as the seat of government. Equal votes per province

  1. Why would there be equal votes per province when 550,000 people live in Connacht and 2.6 million people live in Leinster?

  2. So we look at the American system, where low population areas get massively disproportionate power at a national level, and try to copy it?

  3. I saw an IRA interview from the 70s and this is what they envisioned as the ideal setup in a UI. Could be wrong but fairly close

  4. I fucking love that flag, love equal votes per province, veto Athlone, it’s central which is a pro BUT it’s Athlone which is massive con

  5. Seems frankly ridiculous to choose Athlone, did they ask a child to choose and they pointed at the centre? It’d be a good start if people came up with ideas that’ll actually work, otherwise we could end up with a Canberra or Brasilia, a capital in name only. At least there’s Zoom, they can call in from Dail Eireann. 🙄

  6. Read a great article once about a new capital city being built in athlone.

As the centre point you could have all infrastructure built towards it in the way all roads currently lead to dublin now, except Donegal etc is not cut off this time. Almost everywhere on the island becomes reasonably commutable to the capital especially with modern rail links.

Put new government and major hospitals etc in Athlone, zone business parks and an airport nearby. Cost of these is greatly reduced by building in athlone compared to inner City Dublin.

Less demand on Dublin, property prices there fall, traffic falls, etc.

  7. When Putin drops the bomb, Athlone will be the new capital. There is a bunker under the army barracks in Athlone for this very situation.
