Vaccineren en testen. Daar komt geen kat meer op af.
TBH I think it makes sense. Since things opened up again, I have done pretty much everything I used to do pre-corona, and 2 things made me feel like ‘yeah this is not safe’.
The first was a packed cinema with lots of people coughing. Still, it felt an acceptable risk. It’s a large room and well ventilated, you are only in there for 2 hours, and you only get “near” to like the 15 people around you. I don’t think 2 hours is enough for the virus to jump to you from people not in those 15 around you. Also, (1) cinemas are typically only packed for like 10-20% of the showings over the year, so the risk is not the same for any visit and (2) people typically shut their mouth during movies so the amount of particles traveling is not that high.
The 2nd was going out in various danscafés. Every danscafé was packed, the rooms are small and I cannot imagine the ventilation was as good as it should be, everybody is screaming at the music and yelling to eachother to talk over the loud music, and you are probaly in close range of >200 people for more than a few minutes over an entire night. Also you see & hear lots of sniffling & coughing. Also got a cough for like 2 weeks after the danscafé.
Intuitively, I feel like events/nachtleven/danscafés and schools are the 2 public drivers of this current wave. I’m sure there are also a lot of infections coming from private contacts inside homes or friends getting very close somewhere else, etc.
I think the government is not likely to touch on private contacts until they’ve tried other things. Some measures will happen in schools, but closing them or partially closing them is not going to happen, either. So what remains that they can pound on? Events and nachtleven.
The CST was a first measure but we are seeing its limitations: (1) the virus has mutated and is a lot more contagious and re-infection is happening more, (2) people see their CST as a golden ticket and don’t adapt their behavior when being sick and (3) it’s certainly possible to enter the nightlife without a CST (I have not been to a bar or restaurant without showing my CST, have gotten into multiple danscafés withou showing my CST).
I think requiring a test to go out is a decent option but I think it will result in a lot of people not bothering and the clubs will not make money. It’s also only effective when enforced, and even the current CST is not being enforced everywhere.
I think the more realistic options are (1) major & strict limits on events and (2) mandatory closing hours for nightlife. Probably what is really needed is full closure of nightlife (only bars & restaurants open until midnight/1 AM/…) and major limits on events during day/evening. If figures continue to go up between now & Friday, I expect something like that will unfortunately happen.
It fucking sucks but we are at 500 people in ICU in a healthcare sector that is hurt & tired. If it doubles to 1.000 we will be in major trouble. And everyone should realize right now that any number doubling can happen very fast.
