In three years since coming to power, Georgia Maloney has thrust herself into the international spotlight, forging bonds with EU Commission President Ursula Vander Lion and US President Donald Trump, who calls her a friend. The leader of the farright Brothers of Italy party took office on a traditionalist ticket, even if her time in government has proven to be more pragmatic. I am Georgia. I am a woman. I am a mother. I am Italian. I am Christian. Economically, there has been mixed success. In three years, Italy has seen its public deficit fall from 8.6% to just 3.4% today, while unemployment has dropped to its lowest level in 20 years. But these figures mask deeperly problems with wages declining and economic growth still stagnant at slightly lower than the Euro zone average. Melan has also faced accusations of nurturing democratic backsliding by imposing a ban on registering children of same-sex parents and passing a law allowing anti-abortion groups access to women considering terminations. Her government has also been accused of stepping up judicial harassment of journalists and human rights groups say a proposed security law would effectively criminalize protest. Elsewhere, Maloney has softened her positions. She boasts a 60% drop in illegal immigration, but legal migration is rising. Her government plans to issue half a million non-European work visas by 2028 to fill jobs in high demand sectors, showing her party’s ideology has come up against the reality of Italy’s continuing demographic crisis, its population having declined by 1.3 million over the past 10 pairs.
