EU wants online age verification by 2024 possibly with digital ID

  1. So I will need to submit my ID to jerk off? Hell no, back to good old fashioned magazines with naked people inside

  2. Please, keep telling me how this is the best time in history when they’re literally stripping us of every right we have.

  3. Scanning people’s photos, online age ID? Great, that will deter those terrorists! Maybe also introduce a social credit score to punish people who try to go around it.

  4. In order for this not to be a significant invasion of privacy the system would need to satisfy two requirements.

    1) You should be able to prove your age to a “website” without them knowing your identity.

    2) You should be able to prove your age to a “website” without “the government” knowing that you are interacting that specific website.

It isn’t particularly difficult to create a system that satisfies one of these (either one), but I’m somewhat at a loss how you could satisfy both at the same time.

  5. >Under the strategy for a Better Internet for Kids, the Commission will work towards a European standard on age verification. This type of standard will clarify what is expected from industry when age verification is required on any online tools and services. Such recognised methods would be used by pornography websites, for example, to ensure their users are aged 18 or over.

    >In parallel, Commission will explore how to use the planned European Digital Identity wallet for age verification. The Commission will work with Member States and encourage them to issue electronic IDs to minors under the age of 18, to strengthen effective age verification methods. This would lead to an EU-wide recognised ‘under / over age X’ proof of age based on date of birth in a privacy-preserving and secure manner.

Come on you fucking idiots, stop trying to enforce these useless age verification systems.. You’re not making the internet better for kids and everyone will still find a way around it because it’s not hard to use your parents ID if it’s freaking digital… Also you’ll be putting a name on every visitor to every website requiring this ID and WOoops now they got even more info to sell on you and track your internet habits…

  6. Bad idea. This and the Ashton Kutcher one, with monitoring encrypted messenger apps to catch “child predators” (or some other small crime subdivision).

It’s going to be used for some other purpose.

  7. There’s some really smart people working to write the legislation in Brussels. I’m hoping that they will come up with a sensible implementation of this.

Their biggest issue would be if they intend to extend this to online sexual content. Not only would it be largely bypassed or just outright flouted by non-major porn sites, but the designation of what is and is not sexual content is an increasingly grey area.

This has the potential to be a giant headache and completely ineffective at accomplishing its primary goal.

  8. This Is just TV license with extra steps.

But jokes aside I am really curious as to why age verification is the parameter they want to implement first with a digital id.

Like here in Italy we have SPID which is a form of digital ID for accesing online official services. What would be a good use of this would be to implement such an connected framework for all EU countries so citizens who relocate or are working in any other cou try apart from the COO. Can use the tech to figure out and access stuff that is generally pain in the ass like converting documents, attestations, proof of income and taxes, tax settlement and pension etc. This in a block chain level security format would be like a euro wide ideal digital ecosystem.

  9. Heh heh heh… I remember when this was proposed in the UK, and many on here were very smug and condescending about it. Lets dig throught he archives!

    >Ha! Serious risk Reddit gets blocked in the UK.

The UK has lost the plot, truly what a twisted, sick & bizzare piece of legislation. Mark my words VPNs will be next. The last one is the funniest. Said ironically, but ended up being true.

  10. EU is turning into a surveillance state like China and Russia.

I bet this is all Ursula Von der Leyen’s making, vote out that women already, Germany please take this women back.

  11. So I guess VPN advertising starts making sense.

Want to wank? Either get your government controlled wank loicence “to show you are old enough to visit porn sites” or just connect to a VPN of one of the last few free countries.

  12. It’s already a pain having youtube hound me for an ID. I sure as hell don’t want the rest of internet being made far more inconvenient to use just because some out of touch politicians think it would protect children as if there weren’t million workarounds. If kids want to access something, they will find a way. This will only be a massive inconvenience for everyone. If this passes, I guess I will just have to use an VPN all the time.
