Erdogan says Turkey not positive on Finland, Sweden joining NATO

  1. Hes probably going to use their application as a bargaining chip to demand f35s or some other shit

  2. As expected, Turkey is not so positive towards Swedens NATO membership. Sweden has been openly supporting or tolerating the PKK in Sweden for years, so this was expected.

Not so sure about Finland though.

  3. Sweden is understandable (Swedish support for PKK) but Turkey has absolutely no reason to block Finland.

I think this is just Erdoğan saying “I want some bribes first” that’s all.

  4. If Nato wants to play ball, they can call Turkey’s membership into question. It is supposed to be an alliance of democracies after all. Does Turkey qualify?

  5. Can’t understand why they would object, they are part of NATO but they would deny another country the same protection!

  6. Finland is fine but I also have questions about Sweden 🙂

I am not an Erdo fan but I’ll just grab my popcorn and enjoy watching Sweden (and possibly others) try to convince and make some compromises (possibly he just wants some bribe or nominal victories to save face) for entertainment lol.

  7. >Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday it was not possible for NATO-member Turkey to view positively plans by Sweden and Finland to join the pact, saying the two countries were “home to many terrorist organisations”.

Idk about Finland but for Sweden this is half true. We have many terrorist sympathizers who like many other “refugees” should’ve never been allowed to enter Sweden.

  8. Wow, I never thought that I would hear something positive from this guy. Even if my country’s politicians are making foolish decisions, at least someone will try to stop them.

  9. yeah an alliance should serve all its members, thats shocking news for some people. some far away countries should cut their hostilities with turkey they entertain for cheap publicity gains and support the other members of the alliance.

  10. Just last year Sweden gave YPG Syrian offshoot wing of PKK $350 million in aid. That attitude would be the same as Turkey donating $350 million to IRA during U.K. insurgency days or ISIS during the times when they were attacking neighbouring countries and Europe. These terrorists have killed over 40,000 of our citizens in the past 40 years.

So you can probably guess why Turkey doesn’t want Sweden in NATO.

  11. It’s a negotiation tactic to influence Swedish policy. Notice “not positive” rather than “we will block it”.

  12. Yawn.

Us and UK support Swedish and Finnish ascension. NATO is not the EU where a grain of sand can close the entire beach.

They will either throw them some useless appeasement(keep dreaming about the f-35s tho lmao) or just lean on them a little and they will fold as usual.

Turkey just showing again that it’s only geographic location that keeps it slightly relevant for westerners.

  13. Misinformation campaign in the comments about Sweden supporting the PKK. Seems to be Turkish posters, presumably Erdogan supporters.

  14. To be honest not surprised that the two sole dictators of NATO Erdogan and Orban are likely to oppose accession, I also think those two are the strongest argument against joining in the first place.

  15. I definitely think we should veto Sweden but I don’t think it will happen. Erdogan is the same guy who turned his country to a refugee camp for a few billion dollars. Sweden could easily buy him, so don’t worry.

  16. A month ago the president of Finland had a talk with Erdogan and statement of the talk was that Turkey will support Finland (for joining Nato). The message from their foreign minister was the same

I don’t know about the beef between Turkey and Sweden. I am pretty sure most Finns don’t even know what PKK is.

I think the statement is what we call “iltalypsy”in Finnish. “An attempt to gain something extra out of an agreement after the negotiators have agreed on the content but the contract has not yet been signed by the parties”

I guess it was kind of expected from a country like Turkey. I think those few Finns who didn’t want Finland to join NATO used Turkey (and Hungary and even US) as an argument why we shouldn’t join as they don’t represent our values

  17. Greeks veto Macedonia because of their fucking name: r/europe *sleep*

Turkey maybe thinks (we don‘t know) of vetoing Sweden because they send weapons to Turkey‘s arch enemy PKK/YPG: r/europe *“Why would they do that?“*
