This has been reported on a number of times in Swedish media. Several of the cinemas in Malmö had rejected other, non-Jewish, festivals and events, too, because they either didn’t want to host festivals or had a full schedule. Sadly, a couple of cinemas did reject the festival out of security concerns.
Keep in mind it’s often cancelled due to the risk because of Jews being attacked. In my city there was a debate about antisemitism and a Jew was there therefore the city hall ordered 6x as many security personell as before which was very costly.
If they weren’t using their Jewish film festivals as a way to try to spread propaganda justifying the Palestinian genocide then people would probably be more open to it.
Really disappointing to see the number of people in here confusing Judaism with Zionism. I can’t find anything suggesting the film festival was planning to show Israeli or Zionist films.
Venues are free to turn away organizers for any reason, but if minority groups are turned away from hosting cultural events due to safety concerns, it kind of seems like you’re letting the Nazis win.
If the real reason was that the org *was* planning to show Israeli or Zionist films, the venues should’ve just said they wouldn’t host them for that reason and cut the bullshit. Saying it’s “safety” just blurs the line between antisemitism and anti-Zionism in an uncomfortable way
