Crazy that he has to go now. How he kept his post throughout the pandemic is beyond me. After the fiasco in the “woonzorgcentra” he became responsible for contact tracing, arguably the 2 biggest failings of the government during the pandemic. And now he has to go because of the daycare situation, which doesn’t really seem like his fault?

So basically the high point of his career was being a comic book figure and then it all went downhill.

And while there’s room to say things there, the viciousness with which they went after Wouter Beke was largely spun by the media. Many of the things thrown at his feet, others did far worse, but not a bad word about them.
The media, for over a decade, tried to make him look like a rich out of touch highschooler with no real friends.
Which worked partially because some of the things he did and said did sound like that. But only partially.
And now something happens under a department he headed, and suspiciously several cases become public knowledge, the media after a few days passingly remarks that the case was already being looked at, **but why wasn’t the entire industry up to better standards? An individual personal failing of Wouter Beke who had only been there for 2 years while this has been building up for decades.** Or so the media would have you believe.
Personally, I find it weird he didn’t point this out more. Name names. Point fingers. Not now, but when it all started.
I’m glad he’s gone, but he’s going to be replaced by someone worse, just wait. And that person is going to be more outwardly aggressive, to cover up their appeal to the right, as CD&V is doing.
The eternal mistake of rightwing(oh im sorry, centrist…) parties: believing they went too far left, and appealing to the rightwing voter(whom isn’t interested).
CD&V shouldn’t be a “party of the center” CD&V should be a party that brings solutions for the common people, without polarizing based on race or gender.
But Madhi has already begun trying to convince people it’s a bad thing that people don’t integrate, ignoring the reason for that is they get treated like shit despite of decades of attempts to stop racism, so why the fuck would they want to integrate at all.
And people don’t understand, because they think racism means “discrimination based on race”, and that the antidote to that means everyone has to be equal. Which means no differences noticeable in public.
While it’s actually the colonialist attitude of removing the culture of others to replace it with the “superior” white attitude. Now you’re getting a lot closer to what racism is. All actions and decisions that make it shine through that “others” are expected to behave “like us”, “because we’re just the best there is”, that’s a lot closer to what it actually is. “Discrimination based on race” is just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s barely ever about the intent. It’s about the effect. Regardless of being planned or not.

Well fuck me . This does not bode well for my job
Cd&v en VLD got what they deserved after joining Vivaldi. Vivaldi is nothing more than a PS dictatorship, the PS who got less than 700.000 votes (especially from the non-working Belgians) and that try to ruin Belgium for more than 11.000.000 Belgians. Beke was a minister in the Flemish government, but resigns due to the result of the VRT peiling, nothing else. Joining vivaldi was the biggest mistake of their career and the worst mistake for all Belgians.

His resignation speech was a perfect encapsulation of the huge gap between our “elites” and the rest of us. On the one hand, it’s true that he’s only human and criticism has a real effect on him and his loved ones. It’s also true that the media cares little about the boring minutia of policy where he might have done some good (I can’t judge that) – and only about the drama of the week.
BUT he then completely fails to apply that insight to himself. He apparently cannot accept that good intentions alone do not make you qualified for one of the most important jobs in our country, and that actual “only humans” are on the receiving end of every decision he made. So he just wallowed in self-pity, instead of realizing he should have given the job to someone qualified instead of himself.
I have some empathy for him and his loved ones, but until he realizes his flaws are also part of his humanity, and that most folks cannot promote ourselves to a top job based on our good intentions, my supply will be limited.
