Music rich with South Asian influences is solidifying its popularity worldwide, helping diversify global charts much like Afrobeat, K-pop and Latin music did. At the 2022 Grammys, Arooj Aftab became the first Pakistani winner when she won Best Global Music Performance for her song “Mohabbat.” In 2023, Indian actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh stepped onto the smoke-filled stage of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Southern California. He was the festival’s first artist from Punjab, a region divided between India and Pakistan that’s known for its vibrant musical culture. In 2022, tens of thousands danced and cheered as actor-turned-singer Nora Fatehi became the first Bollywood star to perform at a FIFA World Cup and billions worldwide watched the closing ceremony in Qatar.
As New York City’s mayor’s race enters its final stretch, there are echoes and contrasts to another famously bitter city election in 1977. Andrew Cuomo, a college student, was advising his father as he struggled to gain ground against Democratic nominee Ed Koch. Controversial posters appeared, referencing Koch’s rumored sexuality, which Mario Cuomo denounced. Now, Andrew Cuomo faces criticism for not denouncing attacks on Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, who could become the city’s first Muslim mayor. Critics accuse Cuomo of embracing bigotry to appeal to conservative voters, contrasting with his father’s approach of avoiding divisive politics. Cuomo says he is just responding to Mamdani’s own divisive views on Israel.
The head of the U.N. health agency says more than 460 people were reportedly killed in a hospital in Sudan’s western Darfur region. On Tuesday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, said the incident occurred at Saudi Maternity Hospital in el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur. The city was overrun by Sudanese paramilitary forces over the weekend. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces took the city after more than 500 days of siege. The WHO says it is appalled and deeply shocked by the reports.
Vinícius Júnior has apologized for his outburst toward Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso after being replaced during the clasico against Barcelona. The Brazil forward has blamed his “passion” and “competitive nature”. Vinícius was visibly upset when he found out Alonso was replacing him with Rodrygo in the 72nd minute of Madrid’s 2-1 league win over Barcelona on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Vinicius opened his arms and kept talking to himself as he left the field. He went straight to the changing room before rejoining his teammates about five minutes later. He did not mention Alonso in his apology on X.
After a massive police raid on a notorious drug gang, residents of a Rio de Janeiro favela spent all night collecting bodies in trucks and then laying them down in a central square. By early Wednesday, at least 50 bodies of mostly young men without shirts lay on the ground in Penha, one of the communities targeted. The operation is being decried by critics as Brazil’s latest example of the excessive use of force. Authorities say the raid left at least 64 people dead, including 60 suspected gang members and four policemen. Residents believe the tally is higher and that some of the bodies they have collected haven’t been counted yet.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired safety Kyle Dugger from New England to bolster their secondary with starter DeShon Elliott out indefinitely with a knee injury. Pittsburgh sent a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft to New England for Dugger and a seventh-round selection. Dugger, a second-round pick by the Patriots in 2020, had 17 tackles in seven games this season. Elliott injured his knee during Pittsburgh’s 35-25 loss to Green Bay. The Steelers’ secondary is struggling, ranking last in the NFL against the pass. Pittsburgh faces AFC South-leading Indianapolis this weekend.

The 21-year-old Cooley has eight goals and four assists in 11 games, helping Utah move atop the Western Conference. Only four NHL players have scored more goals than Cooley so far, and the Pittsburgh native is putting himself in position to be considered for the U.S. Olympic team.

Houston has emerged as the top team in the Big 12, reaching five straight Sweet 16s and two Final Fours under Kelvin Sampson. Kansas, once dominant, has struggled recently. Sampson believes Kansas’s success benefits the league, calling them the “bellcow” of the conference. Houston is favored to repeat as Big 12 champions, though, with a strong returning backcourt. Kansas, ranked 19th, features top prospect Darryn Peterson. The Big 12 boasts six teams in the AP preseason top 20. Coaches agree it’s the best conference, with challenging non-conference schedules designed to boost NCAA Tournament chances.
UCLA enters the season ranked No. 3 after reaching the Final Four last year. The Bruins aim for a national title, favored in the Big Ten with Southern California missing injured star JuJu Watkins. Key players Lauren Betts, Kiki Rice, and Gabriela Jaquez return. Despite losing last season’s freshmen to the portal, UCLA adds Sienna Betts, Gianna Kneepkens, and Charlisse Leger-Walker. Coach Cori Close acknowledges the conference’s depth. Maryland, with key starters and top transfers, is a strong challenger. The Big Ten women’s tournament remains at 15 teams, unlike the men’s expanded 18-team format.

This year marks the first time since 2001-02 that the three instate schools from the “Triangle” region of Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill are picked to finish 1-2-3 atop the league. The race includes No. 15 Notre Dame with preseason AP all-American Hannah Hidalgo and No. 20 Louisville.
Texas is aiming to dethrone South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference . Last season, the Longhorns ended the Gamecocks’ long conference winning streak and shared the regular-season title, led by Madison Booker. Texas reached its first Final Four in 22 years. South Carolina faces challenges with key departures and injuries but added top talent like Ta’Niya Latson, last season’s national scoring leader at Florida State.

Fish sticks can be elevated with a touch of class by pairing them with fresh ingredients like heirloom tomatoes. A recipe from “The Blue Food Cookbook” transforms the classic fish stick into a dish inspired by panzanella, a rustic Italian salad. Instead of bread, crunchy fish sticks take center stage. To make this “Blue Food Cookbook” dish, prepare the fish sticks until extra crispy. Whisk together mustard, olive oil, vinegar and salt for a vinaigrette. Toss tomatoes, onion, fennel and arugula with the vinaigrette. Serve with warm, broken-up fish stick pieces and a sprinkle of pepper.

Putin’s statement Wednesday comes three days after he praised a successful test of a new nuclear-powered cruise missile. It appears to be another message to U.S. President Donald Trump that Russia is standing firm in its maximalist demands for Ukraine. Putin said the Poseidon drone was successfully tested while running on nuclear power for the first time Tuesday, describing it as a “huge success.” He declared that Poseidon is unmatched in its speed and depth and “there is no way to intercept it.”

Real Madrid says it will seek compensation from UEFA after a Spanish court dismissed appeals filed by the European soccer organization against a ruling that said the governing body breached EU competition law when it blocked plans for a breakaway Super League. The court in Madrid dismissed the appeals by UEFA, the Spanish league and the Spanish soccer federation. The Court of Justice of the European Union had ruled in 2023 that soccer’s governing bodies UEFA and FIFA acted contrary to EU law and abused their market dominance. Madrid says it is “delighted” with the ruling “confirming that UEFA, in the Superliga matter, seriously infringed the European Union’s free competition rules.”
