American Legion Post 24 will hold its annual Turkey Shoot fundraiser Nov. 1 at the Central Volunteer Fire Department on Halso Mill Road. Proceeds from the event support local students attending the American Legion’s Boys and Girls State programs.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the shoot will start at 10 a.m.
According to Tanner, Post 24 sponsors students from each of Butler County’s four high schools — Greenville, Fort Dale, Georgiana and McKenzie.
“We used recommendations from the school counselors and sponsor a boy and a girl from each school except for Georgiana,” said Post Commander Lee Tanner. “At Georgiana, we only sponsor a boy because the Eastern Star in Georgiana always sponsors the girl.”
Information from the American Legion website explains that the Boys and Girls State programs, founded in 1935, are among the most respected and selective educational opportunities in the nation. The programs teach high school juniors about the structure and function of local, state and federal governments by running mock governments, drafting legislation and conducting elections. Participants act as public officials in simulated cities and states, learning civic responsibility and leadership through hands-on participation.
The fundraiser, which allows participants to test their skill shooting targets, is open to anyone in the community.
