  1. SS: South Korea gets approval from the US to build nuclear submarines. This is a first in recent history of international politics. What would be the consequences of such unprecedented a move?

  2. From the viewpoint that we need to greatly grow our shipbuilding capabilities, this sounds like a good thing. Is this a wrong assumption on my part? Looking past trump hate, of course.

  3. This is Korea’s second “deal” done with Trump, I believe. Korea was quick to agree to Trump’s terms first term to avoid any unpleasantness with the Yanks, but then Trump welched again and dragged the Koreans back to the table a second time.

  4. China is going to strike a deal so they can build one too

  5. Except Korea is not permitted to use any US nuclear technology. .

Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act (AEA) of 1954 governs nuclear cooperation between the United States and other countries, laying out nine non-proliferation criteria. The US Atomic Energy Act has to be altered by Congress before anything can happen. The US didn’t do it for the Australian AUKUS agreement, the military nuclear tech came from the UK.

Korea can do what it likes, without the US permission.

  6. I keep seeing the term “allow”, “approval”, and “permission” to build a nuclear submarine.

Am I to understand that we directly controlled a sovereign nation’s naval power such that we told them what they can and cannot build?
