Most Americans disapproved of President Donald Trump’s decision to tear down the East Wing of the White House to build a 90,000 square foot ballroom, a new poll found.

The new Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll, released Thursday, showed 56% of Americans opposed the demolition for the project while 28% of Americans approved. Another 16% said they were unsure whether they supported or opposed the construction, according to the poll.

The poll also found that the results were divided along party lines. Eighty-eight percent of Democrats, 61% of independents and 22% of Republicans opposed the renovations. In contrast, 62% of Republicans, 17% of independents and 4% of Democrats approved of the project.

The poll was conducted among 2,725 U.S. adults Oct. 24 through Oct. 28. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points.

This is in line with other recent polls that showed widespread disapproval for the $300 million project that is being bankrolled by Trump’s wealthy donors and other corporations. According to a recent Yahoo/YouGov poll, 61% of Americans disapprove of the concept of a ballroom. Only 25% approve of the idea as part of the White House complex.

Trump has faced widespread backlash for the ballroom, especially since photos of the demolished East Wing circulated on social media earlier this month. Trump, a former real-estate developer, has also focused on other changes to the White House, including paving over the Rose Garden, installing massive flag poles and decorating the Oval Office with gold finishes.

The construction of the new ballroom has fueled legal questions over whether Trump is allowed to demolish the historical building. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has defended the move, saying last week that the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) allows “the tearing down of the current East Wing structure” without an application to the commission.

A submission to the NCPC is only legally required for new vertical construction, Leavitt said, adding, “That’s a legal opinion from them, and we are following that legal opinion.”
