  4. That kind of volume speaks more to a complete mental collapse which makes it more dangerous because the teacher was obviously deranged.

  6. This is terrifying began during covid, male teacher – bought the student a €500 Iphone which aroused suspicion. Made a contract to take the childs virginity, nuts stuff. Well done to the Gardaí here, it seems they did a lot of work.

  7. Beyond the more troubling fact that is was a 16 year old student of his, a month has on average days 30.5 days, meaning seven months is around 213 days. 

    That means about 1,173 messages a day, which is 49 per hour, or one every 74 seconds, nonstop. Assumung he picked up 8 hours sleep daily along the way, you can one every 49 seconds (or 73 per hour), nonstop, for a full 16 hours of every day with no exceptions, for seven straight months. 

    I don’t even know how someone manages to balance that with just things like eating food, showering or going to the toilet, etc.

  9. That poor teenager. I can’t imagine the utterly dread he or she must have felt and still feel when any smartphone buzzes or rings.
    Let’s hope that this trauma can be overcome

  11. The boy made several attempts on his own life. Feck leniency put him in the slammer forever.

  12. After the harassment was discovered, the teenager felt he had to leave the school and lost many friendships – something that devastated him.
    He said since the harassment he had stopped playing the piano because it is in a front room of his house and he feared his former teacher would be looking in the window at him.
    He also stopped playing a sport for which he was in line to receive a scholarship, due to fears his former teacher would watch him.
    He told Judge O’Callaghan the trauma would never leave him or his family and that his life had changed fundamentally.

    Can’t get over the wife asking for leniency after hearing all that. “Good father” or not, he groomed and destroyed a teenager’s life. Some things are unforgivable.

    The Teaching Council hiding behind “can’t comment on individual cases” is a joke. That’s the exact attitude that lets predators stay in classrooms for years.

    And the Department of Education saying it’s up to local management? Pure deflection. If a teacher can send 250,000 messages to a student and no one notices, the system is broken.

    Everyone’s passing the buck while a kid nearly lost his life. Sickening.

  14. I know this may be a very simplified question to what I assume is a complex situation (couldn’t get past the pay wall) but why didn’t the student delete Snapchat?

  17. This is awful. I feel for the students poor parents too. It says his mum knew he was struggling for a while and couldn’t get him to open up. She must have felt so helpless. The Gardai did a good job here.

  21. Let me guess, judge will find that this is an exceptional situation and teacher will be left with a slap on the wrist.

  25. This is so utterly weird. It’s hard to get my head around it, except to imagine that this teacher was severely mentally ill.

    The energy and drive to send 250k messages to anyone, not to mind a 16 year old lad, defies rationality. It’s insanity.

    It is so tragic for all involved.

  26. So this is a male teacher, who is married to a woman and has kids himself, harassing a 16 year old boy? Or did I misread this?

    And the wife of the teacher took to the stand to ask for leniency? Christ
