Moldova Approves Alexandru Muntianu as New Prime Minister

In Moldova, Parliament approved the composition of the new government headed by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for November 1 at the presidential administration in Chișinău.

The formal ceremony will take place at 10:00 that day, with the country’s president Maia Sandu and the speaker of parliament Igor Grosu taking part. According to the parliamentary majority, the new cabinet won the support of 55 deputies, after which it will assume office.

Alexandru Munteanu is known as a pro-European economist who had not previously held government positions. His career in the financial sector spanned more than two decades abroad, and he also founded his own investment company.

Analysts expect that the new prime minister intends to continue the previous government’s course toward closer ties with the EU and to implement economic reforms. Among the priorities are stability, the fight against corruption, and the improvement of the investment climate.

The appointment came after the resignation of the previous government, which occurred amid internal political disputes. The formation of the new cabinet is seen as a step to strengthen confidence in the pro-European course ahead of upcoming negotiations with the EU.

About Munteanu and his ties to Ukraine

The 61-year-old Alexandru Munteanu has experience working at the World Bank, is a co-founder of the American Chamber of Commerce in Moldova, and has headed the Alliance Française in Chișinău for over 30 years. By training, he is a physicist, taught at Moldova’s Technical University and worked at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Academy of Sciences.

In his 2018 résumé, submitted to the American Chamber of Commerce in Kyiv, he described himself as an American of Moldovan origin who has lived in Ukraine for more than 20 years. Since 2007 he headed the Investments Department at Dragon Capital, and since 2016 he has run his own firm, 4i Capital Partners, operating in Eastern Europe.

Candidacy for the position of prime minister and the political context

The candidacy for prime minister was put forward by President Maia Sandu after her party’s victory in the parliamentary elections. On October 6, after the results were confirmed by the Constitutional Court, Sandu called Munteanu and offered to lead the government.

Results of the 2025 parliamentary elections: after processing all protocols, the pro-European party Action and Solidarity (50.20%) won. In second place was the opposition Patriotic Electoral Bloc (24.17%). Also entering the parliament were: the bloc of pro-European parties “Alternative” – 7.96%; “Our Party” of Renato Usatîi – 6.20%; the party “Democracy at Home” – 5.62%.

On October 13 it became known that Dorin Recean declined the offer to lead the government again and plans to resign his parliamentary mandate.
