Louvre jewel heist: fake AI videos of the robbery circulate online • FRANCE 24 English

[Music] Truth or fake by the big board. It’s Vic Bell. Good evening to you. Uh today we’re facteing about the jewel heist at the Louve Museum in Paris. Since the theft, which happened on Sunday, videos on social media have gone predictably viral, claiming to show the heist taking place. So Vica, tell us more. That’s right, Mark. 7 minutes. That’s how long it took for the Lou burglars to take off with the crown jewels. And now videos online are claiming to show the CCTV footage of how the heist took place. So let’s take a look at those. But full disclosure that none of these videos I’m about to show you are legitimate. So take it take it with a pinch of salt. Now this is our first video from Tik Tok. It’s 11 seconds long. It shows three men dressed in black. The first one is cutting open a glass cabinet. The second one doesn’t seem to be doing very much uh at all. And the third one uh was described by the comments under this video as trying to exit in some sort of Spiderman position trying to escape. Now this second video uh was found on Instagram. Uh similar vibe with the CCTV footage. This time the three burglars are dressed in yellow vests. Um and it claims to have captured the same thing, but they are filling a black backpack uh before again attempting to escape out of the window. Now, my third uh example is from Tik Tok and it had over 22 million views uh and counting again from a uh CCTV perspective. Uh this one shows the burglars in orange vests smashing the cabinets or indeed the cabinets seem to smash by themselves again before they run away. But Mark, these are just a smattering of the videos that I found circulating online linked to the jewel heist uh at the Lou. There was so so honestly so many of these across social media, but like I said, these are not legitimate. There’s many many clues here signaling on why uh these uh we we can tell that these are fabricated. Um and for these examples specifically that I’ve pointed out, these ones are uh created by Sora 2. Uh Sora 2 is the latest model of the audio video generation uh technology from OpenAI, the company that brings us uh chat GPT. You said one of those videos had 22 million views. That is phenomenal because it that suggests that perhaps 22 million people thought that one of those videos was actually uh the event taking place. Uh but of course it’s very clear that they’re bogus, isn’t it? Um they’ve been AI generated these videos. What is it that you know gives it away? Tell us. Well, the most obvious one is the watermark of Sora AI. That little cloud that we can see there. It’s not always easy to spot, but it is very much there in those videos. Now, Sora 2 just launched at the end of September, and it boasts that it’s capable of producing more accurate, more hyperrealistic videos than previous AI models. It also inserts that cloud watermark into its generated content uh into all of its clips. And that that watermark in fact moves and it bops around the created image so that it’s not possible for the uh creator to crop the video or the image and then hide it. Uh so, let’s take a look at some of the examples. So if we take a look at our first video, we can very much see the Sora 2 little cloud is visible there in the background. But while we have this video up, I want also want to take this opportunity to have a look at some of the irregularities in this video. Firstly, there are just tourists boopping around in the Lou as if nothing is going on at all behind them. Um there’s also uh the glass cutter as well. People have al have also pointed this out online. The one used here in this video is very small and compact, whereas the real one that was found ditched under the truck uh used for the heist was much much larger. There was also no gloves worn in this video. So, a few irregularities there that definitely caught my eye. If we take a look at our second video, now this one, the watermark is almost impossible to spot. It took me many tries to find it, but it does show up here and here. Blink and you miss it. Honestly, for real. Let’s see if we can spot it this time. shows up around here. There we go. I don’t know if you saw that little flash. If you didn’t, I do have a screenshot here. We can see it flash up in the corner there and also here as well. But as I said, link and you miss it. But it does jump from place to place. And as I said, because it jumps from place to place, the creators therefore have to become very creative in order to to to hide this online because they can’t just crop the video uh and keep it hidden. And that is exactly what we saw with our uh Instagram one here. Uh I found this same video. We can’t obviously see the watermark here, but I found seconds of this same video circulating on Tik Tok. And this time we can very much see the Sora 2 logo here. Um, so there are some uh lots of irregularities that we caught here, mainly the watermark that we take place. But as I said, Mark, I saw scores of videos circulating like this claiming to show the heist. Just to end on a nice uh humorous note here, here’s one that I found that was more uh on a on a humorous note, on a lighter note of President Emanuel Neon stealing the jewels himself from the Louvre. Um but overall, I just want to end with saying that the the burglars are still at large and the loot uh is estimated at around 88 million euros and we do have to be vigilant as always about the content that we are consuming. Indeed, Verica, thank you very much indeed for that truth or fake.

Since the robbery of the world’s most-visited museum—which saw thieves make off with France’s priceless crown jewels—multiple videos have surfaced on social media claiming to show CCTV footage of the heist. These videos differ in how they depict the burglars and their methods, but they have one thing in common: they’re all AI-generated using Sora 2, the latest AI video generator from OpenAI. Vedika Bahl walks us through these false videos in Truth or Fake.

  1. I think we the world should advocate against this AI Sora technology to be banned, its just not right. Yes, we could still tell that its fake, but perhaps to some elderly people that are not so completely into modern tech, it may very much look real. The point is we could still tell, but 5 to 10 years from now we won't. And if not to be banned completely ( because I think its impossible now) then at least advocate for users to have restrictions on what videos they are allowed to do and not. I think my point is understandable. I dont think we want to live in a world like that, but it is too late anyways.

  2. If you call it Louv then why do you write Louvre? What's the extra R and E doing there? This i the biggest confusion. Additionally, It took two bytes of extra memory. Computer networks all around the needs send extra two bytes. Multiply it with millions of people. It will create unnecessary traffic for the unnecessary letters contributing to global warming.

  3. In Chinese literature textbooks, we've all studied the story of "Returning the Unblemished Jade to Zhao". The legendary "He Shi Bi" (Heshi Bi) was regarded as an "invaluable treasure" by various feudal states during the Warring States period. These states even waged large-scale wars to claim it, demonstrating its immense value. Yet surprisingly, this "national treasure" that all states vied for ultimately vanished without a trace, its whereabouts remaining unknown to this day.

  4. The story of the He Shi Bi Jade (He Shi Bi) is full of twists and turns, beginning with its discovery. During the Spring and Autumn Period, a man named Bian He from the State of Chu found a piece of unpolished jade (raw jade material) at the foot of Jing Mountain. To demonstrate his loyalty, he presented it to King Li of Chu. When the king summoned jade craftsmen to authenticate the jade, they claimed it was just ordinary stone. Believing Bian He was deceiving him, the enraged king ordered Bian He's left foot to be cut off and exiled him from Chu. After King Li's death and the ascension of King Wu of Chu, Bian He hurried back to Chu and presented the jade to the new ruler. However, the jade craftsmen again identified it as ordinary stone. This time, King Wu accused Bian He of deceiving the sovereign and had his right foot severed.

  5. When King Wen of Chu ascended the throne, Bian He sought to present the jade to the king. Yet his severed legs prevented him from making the offering. Realizing the precious jade would be buried, he wept bitterly, embracing it beneath the Jing Mountains for three days and nights. His tears eventually dried, transforming into blood. King Wen initially assumed the grief stemmed from the loss of his legs, but Bian He's tears were actually tears of bloodshed—his loyalty had been mistaken for treachery. The king ordered jade experts to re-examine the jade. When the craftsmen cut open the jade and declared it a rare treasure, King Wen, moved by Bian He's devotion, renamed it the "He Shi Bi" (Heshi Bi) and enshrined it as the nation's crown jewel.

  6. Netflix next series name "Jewellery Heist" but this time not in Berlin 🇩🇪 but in Paris 🇫🇷.. 😂🤣😅

  7. This can also be blessing: Sora could also generate an Apollo gallery full of Napoleonic jewels that are not stolen, and also generate you admiring the glimmering witnesses of the rich history of France.

  8. What an easy wealth (not money) wealth😂😂😂😂something fishy fish 🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟😂😂😂

  9. Regardless of the jewels robbery, I have noticed that the Egyptian pyramid outside the Louvre has been stolen and replaced with a cheap glass replica!

  10. They are their for maintenance work! And all such groups in any premise requires prior permission and proper reporting! So, this entire burglary/robbery is nothing but staged drama!!

The Jewry are in the museum vault. They simple get free publicity and increase the value of the artifacts for some silly would be future museum visitor.
