After a two-year break, Romania is making a dynamic return to the Eurovision stage, ready to compete once again for a spot in the Grand Final. The Romanian public broadcaster TVR officially announced that the selection of the artist and song that will represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 will take place through the national final Selecția Națională.

This decision marks the revival of a long-standing and beloved tradition. Since 1993, TVR has organized Selecția Națională, a music competition that almost every year (with the exception of 2021) has determined Romania’s Eurovision representative. In the very first edition, the winner was chosen by 1,100 households across the country — a pioneering process for its time that reflected the desire of the Romanian public to be directly involved.

Over the years, the format has evolved, often combining televoting with the votes of a professional jury, while the winner was selected either in a single final night or through a series of semi-finals.

In 2020, TVR experimented with an internal selection, partnering with the record label Global Records. The artist Roxen was chosen internally and performed five different songs, from which both the public and a professional jury selected the one that would represent Romania in Eurovision. The collaboration continued in 2021, marking a more modern and flexible approach to the country’s selection process.

The return of Selecția Națională in 2026 signals a new era for Romania in Eurovision, aiming to revitalize interest and highlight fresh musical talent through a transparent and inclusive competition. Artists and composers from across the country are invited to participate in a process long known for its diversity, creativity, and strong public engagement.
