1. Here we can see another example of why the ‘rules-based order’ is a titanic farce. The Sahrawi people fought against the Spanish colonial government for decades to achieve their freedom only to have [Satan himself ](https://progressive.org/latest/henry-kissinger-enabled-the-occupation-zunes-20231211/)convince Madrid that it was better to simply hand it over to Morocco (a country ruled by an authoritarian and reactionary monarchy) instead of doing the right thing and give the Sahrawi people their independence. Then the Moroccan government itself made use of irredentist propaganda to keep their illiterate population happy despite the absurd levels of corruption and poverty the country suffered with the idea of the ‘Great Morocco’ (which is just imperialism with a fancy name) and used napalm and white phosphorus against the civilian population of the Western Sahara, burning their tents, killing their livestock (sound familiar?), forcing over 100,000 of them across the desert and flooding the territory with Moroccan settlers, a huge collection of violations of the Geneve Convention all in the span of the first year of invasion.

   And what does the UN do to solve this? They spent decades doing nothing just to end up creating a peacekeeping mission completely neutered by two countries in the Security Council (the US and France) with clear economic and politic interests in Morocco’s occupation of the territory, and with no capacity to denounce [the flagrant human rights violations that have been happening ever since](https://www.hrw.org/reports/1995/Wsahara.htm?utm_source=). All just so they can get cheap phosphates and get some concessions in the fishing banks of the Sahrawi coast. But don’t worry! they will lecture the rest of the world about freedom and democracy, all while they support settler colonialism.

2. Moral of the story: if you control a territory for 50+ years and manage to get enough of your settlers in to become the majority, the territory is yours.  

3. The Sahara is Moroccan. This is simply a recognition of historical allegiances of the region. Reminder that none of this would have happened if European nations didn’t slice up Africa like it was a cake from the end of the 19th century until way after WW2…

4. Diplomacy on this front has utterly failed the past few decades now. For Polisario, the only real way forward at this point is armed liberation with Algerian assistance.
