I want to make a satirical comment, but I’m coming up blank.
Southwark seems jaw droppingly brazen on that front as well.
We need a lot fewer restrictions.
We need very specific requirements with minimal opportunity to “interpret” or apply “discretion”.
Where those things are unavoidable, there should be a local referendum on the proposal, specifically because that avoids a dodgy backroom deal.
I’m 37 and over 20 years ago I had to do a school project and was surprised to find out (with minimal effort) that 70% of our local councilors had close links to local construction companies. I doubt it’s gotten better after 20 years of growing corruption, weak law enforcement, spiraling property prices etc.
I was in Melbourne just before lockdown. There are very few restrictions to what you can build on your property. It’s lovely, housing is more affordable, neighbourhoods function better as they’re are lots of mixed use properties. Meanwhile here in Dagenham (a well known are of outstanding beauty and architectural importance), I can’t build a loft extension because the ridge line of my roof would need to go up 2 inches and that’s unthinkable for my neighbours (who both enthusiastically supported my application).
