I expect to see a lot more alcohol seizures with minimum unit pricing. I believe it will open another revenue stream for the criminals.
Now at least two state bodies are blowing our money on a war on drugs.
Isn’t the point of empowering the revenue with armed forces to enable them to go after oligarch type criminals and massive defrauders? Instead more low hanging fruit and squandering resources.
>Last Saturday, as a result of routine profiling, Revenue officers seized approximately 600 litres of beer, 670 litres of wine and 16 litres of spirits at Ringaskiddy Ferry Terminal, Cork.
* Each can is 500ml, so that’s 50 Slabs.
* Each wine bottle is 700ml so that’s 957 bottles or close to 80 cases of wine.
* 16 Liters of spirits? I think I legit have more than that in my house.
Overall, this sounds like someone doing a booze run for a wedding rather than international gang trade.
> The smuggled alcohol had an estimated retail value of more than €11,000,
I wonder if that’s calculated at, Old pricing, New MU pricing, or black market pricing.
>representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €5,800. It was discovered following the search of a Romanian registered van that had disembarked a ferry from Roscoff, France.
I’d say the advertising on the linked story page generated more revenue than that.
Revenue doesn’t care about the drugs or drink. They care about them not getting their cut.
I’m sure they meant to report it was over €13,000 worth of drugs. Don’t want to be too specific in case it looks bad for the person involved. /s
Going to be a good weekend for the revenue lads then.
