Subletting from a main tenant is a different kettle of fish. And they’ve probably had issues with a partner defacto moving in. At least they tell you upfront
E: Also, owner occupied is different too
Its actually disgusting that people like this think it’s ok to request 700 euros, ie nearly a grand a month, for adults to hide in their little shitbox room alone and not have any relationships. It’s sad that we don’t realise how much of an impact this crisis is having on the personal development of young people everywhere.
I also extend that to people who try to do this in houseshares under the guise of I didn’t sign up for an extra housemate – no, go fuck yourselves, everyone is an adult and entitled to get the ride sometimes, you dry lonely bastards (can you tell I’ve been dealing with this recently)
Lots of people take the piss and practically move their bf/gf in with them.
Seeing as it’s the landlord’s home that doesn’t seem like an unreasonable demand. You know, controlling who comes in to your own home.
Owner occupied so they can set whatever rules they like and if the licensee doesn’t like it they can leave.
When you move into someone’s home (as opposed to property) the rules are different.
“Grand so, I’ll only bring casual hook-ups”
It’s not the landlord though saying that – it looks like it’s the other tenants who are sharing?
It’s owner occupied. People absolutely have the right to decide what goes on in their own house.
There’s no landlord or tenant here.
It’s owner occupied so it’s a licensor & licensee.
What do they mean by “n/s’s”??
If you ask me that’s a request from the 2 current occupants. Been renting before and all of a sudden a boyfriend or girlfriend is practically living there, increasing your bills , taking over the common areas etc. not fair on the other occupants
My flatmate had her boyfriend over for “sleepovers” now he basically lives in the house 5 or 6 days a week and he refuses to chip in for the bills. He’s super awkward and never cleans up after himself and noone likes him. They are both holed up in a tiny dirty room and they never talk to anyone else. Everyone living in the house is a woman and we are friends and now were stuck with a random guy who moved know without even telling us. I think it’s just disrespectful. This isn’t the first time this has happened with flatmates, they’re just too cowardly to ask if they can move their boyfriend in and split the expenses fairly. In the advert the landlord didn’t say “no relationships aloud” they are clearly just trying to prevent this type of situation.
That’s nothing compared to other places. They greedy bastards are asking students to take a year lease now, despite traditionally getting more per month because of summer voids. I know someone looking in Limerick, year lease for students, €3,500 per month 5/bed, no washing machine, no dishwasher, plenty of free mould and sticky carpets 🤮
I never thought the Irish would take advantage of each other this badly, it’s shameful. Wtf is the government up to?
Tbh I can see their pov on this considering it’s a house share/owner occupied.
Too often it happens where someone moves in on their own, then a couple of weeks later their boyfriend/girlfriend starts sleeping over and before long just lives there too.
Its owner-occupied, so they can make up all sorts of rules here. You’ve basically got no rights when you are a licensee.
“Hey, this ma bitch Julie”
Don’t agree with the ad, but I had a housemate who had her partner stay over 5 to 6 nights per week. They took over the living space every evening and all of the bills went up. It was shite
I’ll never forget one of the first apartments I ever looked at.
It was a house owned by an older guy which had been converted into three small, dank studio apartments which hadn’t been upgraded since like 1980.
He was adamant he would only rent to women and we were under no circumstances allowed to have men over, or friends past 10pm.
Each apartment had one single bed and one arm chair. There was a dividing wall for the “bedroom” which was essentially a wood panel which didn’t go all the way to the ceiling. The kitchen was a counter in the sitting room with a sink, microwave, hot plate, small fridge and one sliver of counter space to work on.
Dude wanted to run a convent basically.
This isn’t a landlord…this is tenants
There’s no landlord or tenants here though… it’s owner occupied.
Unfortunately in this case, because the property is owner occupied, that’s actually allowed and is down to the person renting to decide if they want to live with that.
Personally, I would find it a red flag if you weren’t ever allowed to have a partner over, but it’s perfectly legal for them to put that down as a condition of renting.
Edit:
> Agreement with your landlord
> Before you arrange to rent a room in your landlord’s home you should agree some ground rules and put them in writing. If you and your landlord each sign and keep a copy of this agreement, you can both refer to its terms in the event of confusion or disagreement. These ground rules might include:
As it’s owner occuppied it’s a lodger type agreement and they can stipulate anything they want.
Reminds me of that time I rented a room in an owner occupied house when I was in 4th year of college. My bf visited me once (not for the night, just during the day in my room). And next day I had a meeting with them telling me I can’t have any guests at all in my room even during the day. I was paying over €500 a month. Not even mention that the ad said I’ll have a private bathroom and then they’d steal the water I’d heat to bath their toddler. And nothing I could do about it cause they’d give out.
Just to mention, their families would always visit and staying for weeks. We shared kitchen and I could never use the stove cause they’d be cooking family dinners.
In conclusion, these owner occupied ads are bull. They want people to pay off their mortgage and practically not live there. It was a crazy experience.
Just a bonus story: I was working late shifts cause I was in college all day and then I’d come back around 11pm and I was told to not have late shifts cause “movement” around the house at that time wakes up their kid. It was mental.
Babe I’m sorry I’m not allowed to have sleepovers
I think it completely defies regular instincts and is a parental level of control to exert over another adult human. Me and my partner both live in separate rentals, I’ll stay in his once or twice a week and then the next week vice versa. 95% of the time we’re hanging out in bed watching telly, only really seeing each other’s housemates on the way to the toilet or kitchen. If someone is obnoxious in their partners home and usurp their resources resulting in bigger bills, obviously that’s shitty – but is it that common? I’ve only ever rented, and my housemates partners have always been sound. If another adult human I was paying 700 euro (they didn’t deserve) a month to told me that I wasn’t to have my partner stay over, I just wouldn’t accept it and I think it’s fair to call them out – thinking you can do that to adults is just so gross.
Well if I’m not getting any why should you?
I had a flat mate who had her fella over every night/ 6 nights a week. They cooked together, ate together, he showered, washed his clothes (in with hers) it was relentless. He was in the kitchen every morning. I get why they have specifically said this.
On one hand while it’s a bit shit the other side of that may have been a previous tenant who constantly had their partner there creeping about and this may have caused issues
I haven’t seen landlords this bad since the British occupied us
Sweet my sister can still sleep with me
How is the majority of the commenters can see the issues with having partners over, yet op is greedy bloody landlords…….
The ad says ‘sharing with 1’but there are ‘two professional women’. What did I miss?
Does no boyfriend or girlfriend sleepovers mean that friend sleepovers are okay? In which case this add is literally just trying to stop people from riding
People can’t have it both ways. Those calling for renting to be considered a viable long term way of life “like it is on the continent” have to accept that this means people who rent need to have full autonomy over how they live their lives in the vast majority of cases – pets, relationships, decorating, etc – and that this needs to be codified into law in the same way that rent and eviction rules are.
If people are going to be subject to rules such as curfews, limits on relationships, etc like fucking teenagers, then people will *never* accept renting as a viable way of living as an adult. That should be obvious. So if those defending this kind of shit want renting to be seen as a viable way of long-term living and not just a “transient” thing, like so so many are always saying when it comes to the debate over the housing crisis, then those people need to accept that it needs to be illegal to try to control peoples’ lives in this manner.
House must have thin walls so
Bang like a freight train until 2 am then send them home lol
I suppose it means it’s just a ride free house, and that might be ideally what some tenants are looking for, so it matches up house mates better.
On saying that I find it hard to imagine that a non owner occupied rental would have phrased a ad like that.
Just reads like the house has people in situ who know exactly the type they want moving in with them. Completely fair they set out what they want in a housemate and if you don’t fit there’s no point attempting to move in only to be asked leave.
I see nothing wrong with this ad. It’s the owners preference and it makes sense too.
It’s owner occupied.
I feel guilty for having a gf after reading these comments..
I was in a house share.
All bills included.
Landlord didn’t give a fuck what you did.
You could have 10 people over and if there wasn’t any complaints, all good.
I smoked weed 24/7 in the garden. No drama.
Only downside was the location.
My first landlord had a wooden box at the front door with an engraved sign over it. The sign read “conscience box for overnight stays”.
