Controversial Brazilian raid on Rio gang leaves at least 64 people dead • FRANCE 24 English
It’s being called one of the deadliest police raids in the city’s history. Around 2 and a half thousand officers and special forces stormed the sprawling FLLAS in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro as part of an effort against drug trafficking and organized crime called Operation Containment. The raid sparked intense shootouts that left dozens of people dead and the city’s residents are fearful. I’m very scared and apprehensive because there are no buses. We’re here in the middle of the street exposed to anything that might happen. It’s tense. It’s very tense. I’ve never been through this before. I’m born and raised here in Rio. It’s chaos. I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s terrifying. One of the operation’s primary targets was the criminal gang, the Red Command. According to Rio’s right-wing governor, a large amount of drugs and weapons have been seized with 81 people taken into custody. But the death toll has attracted international scrutiny. Right. Groups have condemned the bloodshed, a stance the United Nations has also backed. We are horrified by the ongoing police operation in Favllas in Rio de Janeiro, reportedly already resulting in deaths of over 60 people, including four police officers. This deadly operation furthers the trend of extreme lethal consequences of police operations in Brazil’s marginalized communities. Emerging from Rio’s prisons in recent years, the Red Command has expanded its control in fllas. Until Tuesday’s raid, the highest number of deaths during a single police operation was in May 2021 when 28 people were killed in the flla of Jakarzinho.
Authorities in Rio de Janeiro say at least 64 people – including four officers – were killed a large-scale operation against organised crime and drug trafficking in one of the city’s worst days of violence. It comes days before Rio hosts global events related to the UN COP30 climate summit.

Congratulations to the Brazilian police officers!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Beautiful. Hopefully there will be more bodies in the streets. I love it!
Brazil was recognized worldwide as the best beach destination. Don’t let crime and criminals ruin the country’s reputation.
Human rights never complains about the victims of drug traffickers.
Right-wing governor? You must be kidding F24!
All those guns for nothing
citizens may never Armed so well like that
What happens when government supports criminals
Don't forget these favelas gangs , have military training. They hire military personnel for the training . They pay thousands of dollar per hour . And plus every corner at half of distance making it extreme hard . These operation are insane even for navy seals
Being a 3rd world SWAT cop is up there with one of the most dangerous jobs ever
Sometimes it boggles my mind, what is the purpose of human rights groups? They defend the criminal selling drug, forcing women to prostitutions. And they defend them?? What is the purpose of this groups? Are we supposed to be sympathetic to people who turn to crime? While people who continue to work hard despite how hard it is are suppose to quietly take the abuse from the criminal?? What???
stuff the word controversial into your wide a.. you MMFF
Either that or brazil comes like haiti
It is disgusting, how USA sponsored channels like France and DW report incidences. Brazil raid on drug gangs is controversial but USA navy blowing civilian boats out of the water to kill, show off power and intimidate is to be cheered. Not controversial and not illegal at all. Do you guys even have a conscience or any kind of civility, sense of right and wrong at all? Do you really need to push the American narrative regardless of how preposterous it us?
Perangi narkoba sebelum bangsa kalian habis dikuasai geng narkoba. Itu sebabnya negara kami menetapkan hukuman mati bagi pengedar narkoba
The united nations and rights groups are pretty useless, they always protect the criminals rather than the civilians and the victims of these criminals
I am normally quite liberal in my views, but at times the police have to take action to bring violent criminal gangs to justice. You don't need criminal gangs controlling your neighbourhood – they are thugs, not heroes😢.
Notice how when others do it it is "controversial" but when ice raides happen at home it is somehow not "controversial"
NO CONTROVERSY, NO ODDS.
THOSE CURSED BREED ARE NOW CANCELED, THEY, CRIMINALS, KILLED HONEST CITIZENS EVERY DAY.
CURSED BREED, JUST IT.
Total dead 130 + 5 police officers ,this operation need long time ago .

The UN is evil
These guys have already shot down a police armored helicopter with a missile, they kill people with extreme cruelty, they resist arrest by attacking with gunfire and bombs; the only punishment they deserve is death!
THE PRESIDENT OF THAT MESSED UP COUNTRY LULA SAID THAT DRUG LORDS ARE VICTIMS OF THE DRUG USERS…
How else to get these gangs out. None. Bravo to the Police

UN It's an acronym for United Narcos.
This miracle probably raised the life expectancy by 5 years alone. I feel bad for the bystanders, but this needs to be studied and implemented in all countries going forward. Great Job to the people in Brasil!
Good job officers
