The recently daubed graffiti had been erased, but the stark message was still visible: “No migrants”.
Yards away, near the gate to Crowborough army training camp, a home-made banner draped over a bush conveyed a similar tone: “You’re not welcome”.
Last week’s revelation that the [Home Office](https://inews.co.uk/news/the-military-training-camp-set-to-house-hundreds-of-asylum-seekers-4005066?ico=in-line_link) plans to house hundreds of asylum seekers at the East Sussex barracks in the coming weeks has already sparked a visibly hostile reaction from some in the town of around 20,000.
Outside the camp, Claire Firmage, 57, whose daughter has just bought a new-build house in an adjacent development, said the Government’s plan was “absolutely disgusting”.
She told *The i Paper*: “I worry for the safety of our women and children of Crowborough and the surrounding villages.
“I’m extremely worried about my own daughter and granddaughter. I’m not sleeping because of it. They’ve got to go home. They got to house them somewhere else but here.”
After Scampton and Wethersfield, Crowborough is the latest rural community faced with the Government response to a crisis that has seen military bases earmarked in an attempt to cut costs on hotels.
Labour’s plan has also ignited a war of words among local politicians.
Tory MP Nus Ghani accused the Liberal Democrat and Green Party alliance running Wealden District Council of not being ideologically opposed to the plan, and said she’s “appalled” they didn’t inform the public beforehand.
A council spokesperson said no decisions were made “behind closed doors”, adding “this is a decision of the Home Office made by the relevant minister without consultation with the council”.
The Ministry of Defence-owned training camp sits on the edge of the Ashdown Forest, about a mile and a half from Crowborough town centre.
Army cadets from across the country stay and train at the base, where the Government now plans to house single male migrants for a 12-month period with capacity for 540 people.
Its squat brick barracks-style accommodation sit next to Nissen huts behind a fence topped with thin coils of barbed wire.

It’s totally understandable.
Until we know who they are I think they should be restricted to the compound.

The result of a fear campaign fuelled by divisive politicians and news sites.
The reality is if they weren’t told before, most people would even notice there’s migrants being housed nearby.
In terms of rapes and murders, the most dangerous people are:

Friends
British stranger
Immigrant
Asylum seeker
More women were killed by their sons last year than strangers.
If it was families, it might work, but 500 single blokes who are going to be walking about leering at girls/women, and possibly worse, is not a good situation
500 unknown and unmonitored men just dumped into the community.
500 migrants means 500 with hopes and ambitions for the future
migrants are the best example for children because they show great bravery and determination to come and they have culture

500 fighting age males sound like an invasion to me.
The Government and Councils just don’t have a clue, if it was families with children it wouldn’t be a problem. But 500 men who could be capable of anything. When the riots and uprisings start and it hits every councillor and MP on how much they have screwed up. It will be too late as they have caused what will come.
Y’all letting fighting aged men and boys into your neighborhoods unchecked. No wonder Nigel Ferage is popular.

We have got to have a fucking plan here.
Small boats aren’t going to stop. Politicians and rabble rousers can talk tough but most people (not being psychos) are not going to sink the boats or push them back in the sea.
We talk a lot about “British values”. If that means anything then treating people humanely has got to be a feature. That goes for local communities too.
Right now we are putting our fingers in our ears, pretending none of this is happening then making up solutions to the problem on the fly depending on who shouts loudest.
We have got to get real. Invest in facilities for these arrivals, appropriately located. Train people properly to deal with them and give them the resources to process them quickly and make informed decisions about who stays and who goes. Collaborate internationally and build genuine information sharing networks that will allow us to figure out who people are. Support genuine cases to integrate and where we’re not sure, keep them quarantined.
This is the only solution now.
