Sinn Féin politician urges ‘leadership’ from fellow political representatives over Enniskillen bonfire sign

A Sinn Féin politician has hit out at a “hate”-fuelled Halloween bonfire which has been brought to the police’s attention.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed yesterday that it was aware of a sign reading ‘Stop the Boats’ on a bonfire in Enniskillen.

The bonfire in the Cornagrade Road area of the town is popular with some living in the area.

The incident follows public controversy earlier in this year over an effigy depicting refugees that was placed on an Eleventh Night bonfire in Moygashel, Co Tyrone.

The effigy was accompanied by banners with the inscriptions ‘stop the boats’ and ‘veterans before refugees’.

Sinn Féin MLA Jemma Dolan has urged ‘political representatives to show leadership’ over the Halloween bonfire sign, arguing there is no place for such messages in our society.

“Halloween is meant to be fun and welcoming event for everyone in our community and to see this sign draped across a bonfire in Enniskillen is unacceptable and wrong,” she said.

“Illegal bonfires put lives at risk and at times are being used to spread hate.

“It is the responsibility of political representatives to show leadership. We need to tackle illegal, unregulated and dangerous bonfires.”

  16. Bryson et all will be raging that a SF official has called it out. They were crying on twitter how there was so much outrage over the Moygashel bonfire, as opposed to being disgusted by both.
