MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WFSB) – Health insurance premiums are rising an average of 26% for 150,000 Connecticut residents who rely on Affordable Care Act coverage through Access Health CT and Husky Care.
The increases, affecting anyone with ACA coverage, represent one of the biggest rate hikes in the program’s history. Families across the state will likely pay close to double what they paid last year.
The dramatic rate increases stem from cuts to Medicaid by the Trump administration and the ending of COVID-era federal tax credits.
Robin Andrews of Meriden, who relies on ACA coverage while battling stage 4 breast cancer, said the increases are causing significant concern.
“It’s frustrating especially when you are counting on certain medications or treatments to stay alive. It’s been pretty tough,” Andrews said. “Chemo is not cheap and if they do that, I don’t know if I’m at risk of them taking it away. And if I am, I don’t know where that is going to leave me and countless others.”
Access Health CT said this week they had not gotten significant feedback about health insurance costs but are expecting more customers to call about the impact now that open enrollment has begun.
Open enrollment continues until January 15. Access Health CT is holding enrollment fairs across the state this month to help residents navigate their options. The next fair is scheduled for Wednesday in Stratford.
