I feel like I would sell pretty much all of my possessions to keep my cat alive and with me… rather than abandon him.
Stupid fluffy twat.
vet bills are expensive, a lot more then you would think, but still abandoning your pet, especially some of the examples given in the article is just horrible. some people just shouldnt be getting pets, and im not talking because of the financial aspect.
what horrible people throwing kittens out in bags, or throwing a dog over a fence. they are lives not accessories
That’s honestly just incredibly depressing. Like one guy said i would sell all of my possessions than abandon any of my pets/compaions. There a living thing like us and deserve the same respect.
If anyone is caught doing this they should face a hefty fine (which should then go as a donation to a local animal shelter) and be banned from owning any other animal for life.
This week I took my orange tabby boy to the vets, £900 to find out he has terminal cancer (£300 blood tests and £600 scans and some medication). I am lucky enough to be able to pay but how do people on low income, who love their pets as much as I do mine, stand a chance. Vets were never cheap but PE have been hoovering up vet practices left right and centre, profit at the cost of suffering.
You should at minimum have life time pet cover and should be easily able to spend up to 300 a quarter on vet bills.
If you cannot or would struggle.
Do not buy a pet.
My bearded dragon had a minor problem. Vet quoted £600. I had to sorta negotiate them down to around £200 of treatment, which dud the trick and shes now just fine. But if it was £600 or her life I dont think i could have justified the cost considering im not rich
I could never do this to my cat. I do not have much in my life but she is an irreplaceable ray of sunshine in it. It does not help that shelters are full to bursting so they cannot take these pets off people’s hands and at least end up in a safe place.
There needs to be something done about bloody pet insurance companies too, I’m in a fortunate position that I can afford my girls insurance but without exaggeration it doubled last year from the year before and had gone up another £200 this year. And I’ve been paying out of pocket for medication for her as well. It is absolutely scandalous and I’m not surprised people skip it.
How that headline wrapped left me with:
More pets being abandoned in England as food
Just how much would it cost to insure, vaccinate, chip and vet insure a Cane Corso or English Mastiff from puppy to adulthood per month and per year?
Also how much would it cost to feed it per week and per month?
I’m seriously thinking of buying one of them but have no idea of the approximate cost.
I would literally starve to death and sell everything i own before giving up my pets
No to worry, Blackrock/PE buying up veterinary clinics will solve it I’m sure

You can’t live anywhere with one anymore if you’re private renting in my experience. I’d rescue a cat probably if I was allowed one.
I’m sure renters having to move and being unable to find properties that allow pets has something to do with it too… more competition for rentals means landlords can be incredibly picky.
Struggling right now to find a place for me and my cat. Most technically allow pets, but the landlord gets to choose from multiple applicants
Wish this was the case in Scotland. About a grand to buy a dog now and the charity won’t give me one because my fence isn’t 5ft even though my gardens are huge for animals to run wild. When did dog prices jump from a few 100 quid to silly prices like 1,200 even for a mongrol.
