  1. Extra police officers will patrol trains and railway stations across the UK following the [mass stabbing on a train near Cambridge](https://inews.co.uk/news/two-arrested-after-multiple-people-stabbed-on-train-4016116?ico=in-line_link) which saw 11 people taken to hospital.

As well as deploying extra officers at major stations such in Birmingham, York, Leeds, Manchester and London, police will also be on board trains running on the East Coast Main Line until at least Tuesday.

“This is not usual, they usually focus on stations, but it is important to reassure passengers,” a government source said.

However, long-term changes – including airport-style scanners at train stations and officers armed with Tasers on carriages – [may be needed to boost safety](https://inews.co.uk/news/15-minutes-of-horror-what-we-know-huntington-train-stabbing-4016381?ico=in-line_link), security experts told *The i Paper*.

[Ministers](https://inews.co.uk/topic/labour?ico=in-line_link) refused to rule out major security changes to the UK’s rail network following Saturday night’s attack.

Defence Secretary John Healey said if there were “wider policy conclusions that we need to draw, then the Government will do that”.

Two men born in Britain, aged 32 and 35, were detained at Huntingdon train station after [the mass knife attack on the Doncaster to London train](https://inews.co.uk/news/crime/witnesses-recall-horror-huntingdon-train-attack-4016440?ico=in-line_link). They were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Two passengers remain in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

British Transport Police (BTP) said there is nothing to suggest that it was terrorist incident at this stage. The Government said the UK terror’s level is unchanged.

BTP said its patrols will be stepped up on trains and stations in response to the attack. More BTP officers will be on trains over the next few days, *The i Paper* understands.

  2. The problem is not that there’s not enough patrols. The problem is that carrying knives has been normalised for some members of society.

Police need to be very strict on stopping and searching the people who are most likely to be carrying knives.

However I can see that being “racist”.

  3. It wasn’t terrorism, also we’re deploying armed guards to as many trains as we physically can

  4. Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted comes to mind.

  5. There are many many more Reddit posts about this now that we know they were black people.

Strange not that many people gaf before that.

  6. this will only criminalize black and brown bodies more than they already are and lead to horrible outcomes for racialized individuals who are already at risk

  7. That’s just knee jerk, it’s not practical and it’s unacceptable way to live. Why are we so tolerant of those that damage others lives.

  8. in other news the government has announced a policy of closing stable doors

  9. How many trains can the police realistically patrol though?

  10. Making everyone wear bulletproof vests forever rather than just unloading the guns (that would be racist!)

  11. Phew I’m glad it wasn’t terror related. Just two British nationals (therefore just as British as anyone else, take that Farage), who went on a stabbing spree for no reason at all. Calm down everyone and above all else, *avoid online speculation*!

  12. ..on their way home because they can’t afford to own a car?

  13. So if two people got stabbed in a random Tesco supermarket, they’d put patrols in all Tesco’s? This just seems performative, and a waste of taxpayer money that could be better used with more well thought out ideas.

  14. Not a peep on the front page of reddit, nor in the world news sub.

I’m guessing that to be roight tuffed and tickled, dis’ll be swept unner da rug den, nuthin ta see ‘ere, move along!!

  15. As an American this makes me think of mass shootings. Do what you will as far as immigration goes but these guys were born in the UK(?). At a certain point it seems like both our problems might have the same solution, whatever that might be. Horrible situation. I hope everyone is able to make a full recovery.

  16. Who remembers Mick Lynch telling the right wing press that the strikes weren’t all about pay, they were also about keeping trains and stations staffed for the safety of the public.

  17. British transport police ordered to do their actual job in shock announcement.

Obviously I’m joking but not seen an officer on an actual train in years

  18. I rarely see the police on the streets let alone now on trains.

  19. Totally knee jerk, I’d rather see them patrolling their local streets more and getting to know their community

  20. Mystic meg here. My prediction is that train companies will start using private security, and your ticket prices will go up, and a few people will still get stabbed

  21. They’re very good at performative policing. You only ever see police when they’re speeding to and fro or harassing peaceful protesters. But after a high profile incident, they’re making themselves seen.

  22. Thought they already did, well certainly under cover cops
