Scotland to supply 70% of UK wind energy in North Sea-style exploitation row

  1. Not sure how the government subsidising windmills to get built in Scotland is ‘exploitation’.

Wind farms are bring in rates, plus they create jobs in building and maintaining them. Seems like a good thing to me.

  2. “Hinkley Point residents claim exploitation, as their nuclear power plant supplies 75,362% of their needs which would make them the most energy rich microstate in Europe”.

  3. What utter pish is this? Some areas of the UK contribute different things, it’s not exploitation.

  4. > critics warn that Scotland’s rapid expansion of wind power for export could be a repeat of the oil experience, when billions of pounds of North Sea oil wealth largely flowed south [to companies and the treasury] instead of benefiting local communities.

    …

    > [Community councils] say they are being overwhelmed by a “barrage” of over 700 renewable energy applications in the Highlands alone, including wind, hydro, storage, and transmission projects, many backed by well-funded overseas developers.

    …

    > The councils want an inquiry into the cumulative impact on communities and landscapes, warning that unchecked development could override local democracy and accelerate depopulation.

  5. Weren’t various politicians arguing not so long ago, that having a lot of the UK’s electricity generation being based in Scotland would be a valuable bargaining chip in the event of independence ? There was that phrase “Scotland could be the Saudi Arabia of Renewables”, wasn’t there ? How Scotland could power not just the UK, but a great amount of Europe too ?

Demanding a halt to new constructions, would mean the rest of the UK would develop their own on and offshore wind generation, and then in the future, should Scotland be independent, the most convenient and profitable export market for electricity… doesn’t exist.

  6. Hopefully they can expand and renew Canary Wharf with the money generated – much like what was done with oil. Hate to see it benefit Scotland.

We should be grateful they even let these be built here!

  7. Always said, divert the funding to the north east instead. We will give it to everyone we just need investment.

  8. Posts like this always bring out some from the woodwork. What’s new.

  9. Why is it exploitation?

At this point I think Scotland needs to leave the union. The ceaseless one way accounting is exhausting. London produced a tax surplus of 36 billion which is then passed to Scotland and the English regions. You will never see this brought up.

Anything that Scotland produces is always exploitation. Not just from the Nats, but from newspapers like the herald.

Scotland should go. If Scotland thinks it can make a living on wind power taxation, then it should be allowed to go for it.
