As Remembrance Day approaches, The Green Howards Museum in Richmond is inviting the public to a special afternoon talk exploring the remarkable history and ongoing work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

The event will take place on Saturday, 8 November 2025, from 2pm to 3pm, and will be led by Pat Burgess, a dedicated CWGC volunteer.

The talk will shine a light on how the Commission continues to honour and care for the final resting places of 1.7 million British and Commonwealth servicemen and women across the world. For more than a century, the CWGC has maintained 23,000 cemeteries and memorials in over 150 countries, ensuring that those who gave their lives in service are never forgotten.

From the distinctive Portland stone headstones to the beautifully tended gardens, the CWGC’s work reflects a deep commitment to remembrance, dignity, and peace.

Attendees will gain insight into the Commission’s origins, the challenges of preserving war graves worldwide, and the crucial role volunteers play in sustaining this legacy today.

Tickets cost £5, with proceeds supporting the event and offering visitors the chance to contribute further toward the CWGC’s ongoing mission.

This promises to be an inspiring afternoon of history, remembrance, and reflection.

The Green Howards Museum is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm).
