Hi
I could use your help.
In july I was driving down the 51, just precisely on speed limit. Black VW came with high speed from the back and overtook me on the left in a bend, scratched and dented my car on the driver side, kept driving, overtook the next car also dangerously close and then was gone. Went to the police station in Gol afterwards, reported it including their license plate. Also reported it to my insurance in Germany and they say, they can’t get a hold of a Norwegian with that license plate. Any ideas what to do now? I don’t want to pay the repair costs out of my own pocket..

  1. It’s possible to search for an owner on vegvesen.no if you have a registration number, but you have to log in with bank-id. If you pm me the registration I can do it for you.

  2. If I understand you correctly, they’re saying the plate number must be wrong as they cannot find any Norwegian with that number?

Do you have a picture that clearly shows the registration plate?

Feel free to PM me, but depending on what I find I might only be able to respond via whatever contact details you gave to police. Am cop in Norway, but this is a private account and Reddit isn’t an approved platform for sharing potentially confidential information. If you filed a police report and provide enough identifying info here, I can find the report.

  3. Could be a fake or stolen license plate (good idea if you’re going to drive like an idiot) but if not it should be easy to find the owner, as others have said.

  4. Was it a regular license plate (for example AB12345) or a custom text? In Norway, you can get personalised license plates («personlig kjennemerke») that can be transferred between cars and may also be completely disconnected from any vehicles. For authorities it should still be possible to find who owns the rights to the plate (either currently or at a historical date), but it might not be possible for you as a private person.

  5. Skiltregisteret.no

Shows you excactly who owns the car, all you need is their licenseplate

  6. Send it to me and I’ll find who it’s registered to and dm you
