TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Southwest Gas crews are responding to a gas leak on the southwest side this evening following a reported home demolition.

A property on West Box R Street, which is north of South Kinney Road, is the source of the leak, which has now been turned off, according to Southwest Gas.  A man, who identified himself as the homeowner, told News 4 Tucson the leak came when the gas line was struck during the demolition of an old home.

Southwest Gas provided News 4 Tucson with the following statement:

“Southwest Gas crews responded to a leak caused by a third-party near W Box R St. in Tucson, AZ. The safety of our customers and the people living in the communities we serve is our priority. Southwest Gas crews have turned gas off to begin repairs . . .”

The company reminds residents that even a brief sulfur-like smell can be the sign of a natural gas leak. Other indicators include hissing from an appliance, the ground or discolored vegetation around natural gas infrastructure.

When signs of a leak are present, the company advises people to quickly leave an area, call 9-1-1 and Southwest Gas at 1-877-860-6020.
