A federal judge is expected to hear arguments Tuesday after Illinois groups sued federal authorities last week for what they described as “inhumane” conditions at a Chicago-area immigration facility.
US District Judge Robert Gettleman called for a Tuesday morning hearing, acknowledging that the timeline was “rushed.” But at a Friday emergency hearing, he said, “the nature of the case and the request for relief requires immediate attention.”
As attorneys representing the federal government asked for more time to prepare, the plaintiffs’ lawyers called the situation in the west Chicago suburb of Broadview a “human rights emergency.”

Tuesday marks the nation’s first major Election Day since President Trump returned to the White House, and his leadership and policies dominated the debate in almost every race — even though the Republican was absent from the campaign trail.
The biggest contests are in Virginia and New Jersey, the only states electing governors this year. Trump lost both last fall, but voters in each have a history of electing Republicans for statewide office. The GOP candidates have closely aligned themselves with the president, betting that his big win last year can still provide a path to victory this time, even if the party occupying the White House typically suffers in off-year elections.

President Trump won’t be going in person to the Supreme Court hearing Wednesday that will determine the fate of the tariffs at the heart of his economic and foreign policy — but his treasury secretary says he will be there.
“I’m actually going to go and sit the — hopefully in the front row and listen — have a ringside seat,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday on Fox News Channel’s “Jesse Watters Primetime.”
Trump had said he badly wanted to attend the arguments, but ruled out what would have been a highly unusual appearance, saying it would have been a distraction. “It’s not about me, it’s about our country,” he told reporters Sunday.
