“This has apparently become a no-go zone for anyone who is critical of Islam,” Dewinter said when he and colleague Wilders were stopped by the police.
The walk went from the Flemish Parliament to the Madou square, but there Dewinter and Wilders were immediately met by a policeman holding the police regulation in his hand. Both politicians were not allowed to go beyond the border.
The original idea was to head for Molenbeek, but Mayor Catherine Moureaux forbade that on Thursday evening. Afterwards, on Friday morning, a ban was also imposed in the municipalities of Anderlecht, Sint-Joost-ten-Node and Schaarbeek.
**Council of State**
After their ‘islamic safari’ in Molenbeek in 2017, it is now the second time that the far right leaders are not allowed to enter a Brussels municipality. Dewinter announced that he will go to the Council of State again to challenge the decision. In 2021, the politicians were proven right that the 2017 Molenbeek police ordinance was unjustified.
“I am ashamed that as a politician I am not able to establish what needs to be established: that the municipalities are completely Islamised. That is what the mayors do not want to show,” Dewinter declared. “This is not a police regulation, but a fatwa and it shows that Islam is in control here,” the Vlaams Belang member of parliament continued.
Geert Wilders joins his colleague and emphasises that he has already visited many countries and Islamic regions, but that he has never experienced this. “We wanted to show that this is a piece of Western territory, where we are losing our own culture and values. I have never understood why we are stopped here on the doorstep. I have no words for that,” said Wilders.
The Dutch politician also lashed out at Molenbeek’s mayor Catherine Moureaux (PS), as he stressed that they wanted to walk through Molenbeek in a peaceful manner. “Mayor Moureaux apparently finds it more important to accommodate the followers of Islam. Thus Molenbeek has become your most prominent local caliphate, a de facto no-go zone for parlemetarians. That is an unacceptable capitulation,” Wilders believes.
**Submitting an application**
Since it is just a walk, both gentlemen were asked why they still submit an application to the municipalities and mayors involved. It is about security reasons and the threat that the Dutch politician Wilders is facing.
When returning to the Flemish Parliament after the short walk, the police intervened when three demonstrators were waiting for Wilders and Dewinter with a banner. Their identity was checked.
Don’t agree with their politics, but this isn’t right either.
This just helps their agenda, and will convince people on the fence that there’s a real issue. Either these mayors are stupid or they truly believe that it would be a security risk if they went on a walk.
