Louvre heist: Who are the seven suspects arrested by police? • FRANCE 24 English

11 days after that daring heist at the Lou, a breakthrough in the case. French police say they have arrested five more people. The Paris prosecutor adding one of the suspects apprehended is believed to have been part of the fourperson squad who carried out that raid. None of the precious jewelry, however, has yet been found. Antonio Carrian is standing by at the police commission investigating the case and we can go across to her now. Antonio, good afternoon. What are we learning today? [Music] Well, what we’ve learned today primarily is that five new arrests have been made in different places across Paris as well as the northern Paris suburb of Sandi. Uh over the course of yesterday evening, one of them, I repeat, only one was linked to the scene by physical DNA evidence. uh as such thought to be one of the famous infamous four who set up a lift outside the Louv in broad daylight uh and in a CCTV blind spot to take uh 88 million euros worth of precious jewels uh from the capital’s collection. Uh the other four who were arrested last night are not believed to be suspects uh but are thought to be able to help the police shed further light on what happens. The investigation very much still continuing. The prosecutor on the radio this morning said that with every um path they explore, more objects, more sources of evidence come to light and the investigation is far from over. And Antonio uh over the weekend uh police in France arrested two people, one of them who was on that uh at Shal airport. What are we hearing about them? Well, we’ve had a few more details on who they are. Um both uh seem to be uh not necessarily uh infamous master criminals. One of them did uh has been connected previously uh to a case of aggravated robbery um and otherwise uh has worked mostly in manual trades and been unemployed in recent years. The other um has minor criminal record of uh road safety uh infractions and otherwise worked as a clandestine taxi driver. Now, they’ve both been charged with theft with the aggravating factors of operating in an organized group. Uh, as well as an additional charge of criminal conspiracy. That’s 10 and 15 year uh sorry, 15 and 10 uh year sentences usually asked for both of these offenses respectively. Um, now they’re both now in detention pending trial. Uh the prosecutor admitted as well in her radio interview this morning uh that this two waves of arrest over the weekend and then last night. That wasn’t necessarily the plan, but the investigation uh was accelerated quite abruptly when it transpired that one of the people they had been keeping an eye on had bought a one-way ticket to Algeria. And that’s the man who was of course arrested over the weekend at Shaldigaul airport. As you say though, even with seven people now in police custody, still no sign of uh all of those jewels. Uh the prosecutor said though uh that um no uh that the sorry the avenues of investigation have not been exhausted. She appeared optimistic.

Eleven days after the Louvre heist, there is a breakthrough: five new arrests were made as part of the investigation, including one person suspected to have participated at the break-in according to the Paris prosecutor.     If anything, at least arm them with blow torches, or skill saws.

  24. Precious jewelry is like real estate holdings. We pass down wealth to our heirs and the money just sits there collecting interest (for the heirs, obviously.) This type of money does nothing for the common person. I know "Work harder…" But this is the basic problem with a capitalist system. Dormant dollars.

  25. I have three Algerian who have shared a house in South Africa . One went to visit a sister in Paris never came back . Then the next one has just left leaving a French- Arabic bible in his room . His replacement has just been in Botswana where diamond cutting is conducted. Awfully strange behaviour when one puts into context of this heist ? Or have I been watching too many movies?

  37. The French prosecutor is reporting that the robbery at the Louvre was carried out by a bunch of amateurs.

    It is impossible to imagine a more well organised robbery – they weren't cat burglars, the "best Security in France" was completely rolled over by some criminals in a hire van.
