Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has declared that Lebanon must pursue negotiations with Israel as the only practical solution to ongoing border conflicts and repeated Israeli military strikes. Speaking during a meeting with Lebanese political figures at the Baabda Palace east of Beirut, Aoun characterized diplomacy as the necessary alternative when military options fail to achieve political objectives.
Diplomatic Approach to Conflict Resolution
President Aoun emphasized that “the language of dialogue surpasses the language of war, which only brings devastation,” noting that historical conflicts universally conclude through negotiation rather than continued fighting. He reiterated Lebanon’s preparedness to engage in discussions aimed at ending Israeli occupation and restoring Lebanese territories through diplomatic channels rather than military escalation.
International Mediation Efforts
The Lebanese leader’s comments coincide with ongoing indirect mediation efforts led by US envoy Thomas Barrack, who has been working to facilitate dialogue between the two nations following months of cross-border violence. Aoun also reported progress in Lebanon’s relationship with neighboring Syria, noting serious discussions about establishing joint committees to address border demarcation and Syrian refugee repatriation.
Domestic Reforms and Economic Outlook
On domestic matters, President Aoun highlighted economic reforms implemented since his government’s formation in February, pointing to positive economic indicators and projecting approximately 5% growth by year’s end. He stressed that Lebanon possesses significant recovery potential if the country can transcend sectarian divisions and unite around common national interests.
