Szia! I took this picture in Szimpla Kert, Budapest. Does anyone know the history of the people in the picture?

  1. Maybe you can ask the workers in Szimpla Kert, I think it could be a family portrait of “average” ppl. So maybe there is nothing special story behind it

  2. I kind of think this is a propaganda picture from the 50’s. The farmers are gathering around the woman who is reading loud from a book. Trying to convey a message about the country men’s desire to educate themselves.

  3. By their clothing, I’d say these people from the 1940-1970 period. Altough my grandma a dresses like that up until the 2010’s.
You can see a “búbos kemence”, a type of furnace in the background, that suggests it’s a rural area. It’s a multigenerational family living together by their looks.

The way theiy are portrayed reminds m of the typical soviet depictions of workers.

So yeah, these are my guesses, I’m no expert or anything.

  4. Baffled peasants gather around a mysterious book. They are apparently holding it upside down. Somebody was lazy to fix that wall.

  5. Captain here: I am super glad you posted this and I am excited to share some more details about the picture itself. This picture actually comes from my grandmas place- old flat which was in the same street as Szimpla kert is now, a few years back we did a renovation of the flat and we had to completely clear it out and we sort of “donated” these things to Szimpla, they were glad to take it. This picture was hanging in the masterbedroom of my grandmas flat for over 50+ years. I remember when I was a kid I asked her multiple times about the origin of the painting and how where it comes from but she never really wanted to answer, and was kind of secretive about it. When she became old and unfortunately sick and got admitted to the hospital she probably knew it’s her last days. So I remember when I visited her last time in the hospital she told she wants to share a family secret she knows only. At that point I was almost sure it will be about the painting so I got to admit I got excited. She told me to get closer to her so she can whisper it, so I did and then she finally said it: ” don’t buy crypto you lil bitch it’s gonna crash”
So that’s the story of the painting and I totally made it up.
